Gmail provides a compelling alternative to the Case mail system. This article deals with forwarding your Case Email to GMail. Another alternative is to use GoogleApps which will allow you to "natively" handle your Case Email with a GMail-like web interface and 2GB storage limit.

[edit] Getting a Gmail Account
If you don't already have one, you can either get an account using your mobile phone, or from an existing Gmail user. If you know someone who has a Gmail account, just email them asking for one, they probably have a big pile of invites.
[edit] Mail Forwarding
First, forward mail to your Gmail account. To setup email forwarding, login to Access iPlanet Delegated Administrator. Click on "Mail Delivery Options". Check the box next to "Enable forwarding" and enter your Gmail address in the box below. Make absolutely sure you have an <enter> after your email address, or it will fail to forward. Then hit the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
You can also turn off storage of your mail, since it will all be stored on Google's servers. This avoids people getting bounce messages when your mailbox is over 100MB, although your mail will not fail to forward to your Gmail account. To do that, uncheck the box labeled "mailbox(POP3/IMAP4)" at the top of the same page from before. Better hit that "Save" button again.
[edit] Add Your Case Account to Gmail
Gmail lets you send email from your Case account. To do this, login to your Gmail account and go to "Settings" (top right corner). From there, select the "Accounts" tab and under the "Send mail as:" section, click "Add another email address". Put in your Case address, wait a few minutes for the mail to arrive in your Gmail account (assuming you have forwarding on), actually this may be more like 10 minutes, given the speed of Case's mail servers, so you may want to go get something to eat. Once you receive the confirmation email from Gmail, click the link and you should now be able to send mail from your Case email address. You can set it as the default on the "Accounts" page if you want.
[edit] Uploading old messages
This is really the only tricky part, there's GMail Loader for UNIX/Linux/Mac style mail files (if you keep your mail on your computer). It says it will support IMAP eventually. In the meantime, there are round-about ways to transfer your mail.
[edit] Bonus Tips
- A list of keyboard shortcuts.
- You can access your Gmail in a format that works well on a mobile device by going to http://m.gmail.com.
- The maker of GMail Loader has an awesome page of all sorts of Gmail utilities.
