[edit] History

[edit] Origins

The Athenian was founded in the fall of 1999. In the beginning, the magazine was essentially run by a single person acting as the full editorial staff, with occasional contributions from others. Not surprisingly, this was the origin of The Athenian's culture of anonymity, getting beaten being on few people's to-do list. Active production is believed to have begun in the fall of 2000, and been initially at the rate of one issue per semester. "Issue 3.14159" is known to have been published in the fall of 2001, and was the only issue published during that semester - or indeed, the entire 2001-2002 school year. The initial format was a color cover over a black-and-white interior, with primarily extremely short articles and low-quality images. Cover images featured a single famous person, usually mockingly; for example, the selection of "Balki" (see WikiPedia:Perfect_Strangers_(sitcom)) as the "Man of the Century".

Following on the failure to publish in the spring of 2002 and the then-editor-in-chief's upcoming graduation, Media Board president Nick Hanek was instrumental in securing new leadership for The Athenian.

[edit] Reform

Begun by the first Annual April Athenian McDonald's Expenditure (AAAME) on April 28, 2002, the Matt Greenfield era brought major reforms.

During his tenure as editor-in-chief, among other reforms, The Athenian:

  • abandoned the color cover in favor of all-black-and-white
  • featured Athenian staffers on the cover in various silly pictures taken on campus
  • increased the length and quality of articles
  • increased the number of contributors to an eventual high of around twenty
  • published issues three times per semester
  • featured the work of illustrators for the first time

[edit] Present

Upon Greenfield's graduation in the spring of 2004, Scott Millinovich became the third editor-in-chief of The Athenian. He has maintained the reforms of Greenfield's tenure, but changed the cover designs again. They now feature parodies of famous magazine covers, redone to include the name of both publications in some form (for example, the "Cosmathenian" issue) and various Case-specific jokes. He is set to graduate in the spring of 2006 and become the second editor-in-chief to pursue a medical degree.
