[edit] Discussion
[edit] Banned Programs and Protocols
There is a list of banned programs and protocols available.
[edit] Programs that make heavy use of broadcast
Why are programs that make heavy use of broadcast still banned? From my understanding, back in the early days of CWRUNet, all the routers on campus were programmed to broadcast to the entire campus. Therefore, any broadcast packet would reach every host on campus. Programs that relied on broadcast for communication, like Doom 1, literally brought the network to its knees. Currently, the broadcast network for a given switch is limited to hosts directly connected to that switch. This effectively solves the problem with broadcast packets crippling our network. Why then does this policy persist? --Gregory.Szorc 13:31, November 9, 2005 (EST)
Also, don't protocols like ZeroConf (mDNS) and WINS/NetBIOS use broadcast packets? These services run quite happily on the Case network. (And it's a good thing too, since Mac OS and Windows respectively make them non-easy to turn off.) --Andrew.Witte 14:28, November 9, 2005 (EST)
At Case, WINS uses unicast packets and the campus WINS servers. --Brian.Christian 14:58, December 3, 2007 (EST)
