[edit] Screensaver Java App

[edit] Brainstorming

What about giving it more dashboard-like features? Make it like the portal combined with a slideshow. See uploaded posters, today's events, current weather, etc.--Gregory.Szorc 22:39, September 24, 2005 (EDT)

Someone who wants to see today's events is going to want to go to a web page and see them now, not wait around for a screensaver to decide to show them. Well, actually, given the current state of things it might be quicker to wait for the screensaver than to wait for MyCase to load, but it sounds like that problem is going to be fixed in the fairly near future. --Andrew.Witte 19:51, September 25, 2005 (EDT)

Maybe a desktop image rotator or another full scale java applet that implements more interactive features. --Benjamin.Chodroff 16:18, October 5, 2005 (EDT)

[edit] Feed format

Will it work with http://www.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=38678765@N00&format=rss_200 or http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:jpeg.

Version 1 of the screensaver will be using Rome Syndication Java source code to handle parsing the feeds. It is capable of handling just about everything under the sun including all versions of RSS, Atom, and RDF. I just have to figure out what makes it tick.

[edit] Nord Computer Lab

Nord computer lab has a special install scenario. Currently, David Carlin uses a winexit.scr to automatically log users off after 15 minutes of inactivity. There is also a warning countdown before this occurs. This article on how to Customize Your Log-on Screen Saver will allow us to specify a unique screensaver to run during the login prompt! Perfect.

I have confirmed that this Windows registry hack works with the CasePhotos Screensaver for Windows XP. --Benjamin.Chodroff 16:43, October 5, 2005 (EDT)

[edit] Regarding Usernames

Case is making a push to eliminate the display of your network username from public sites. Would it be possible to select a different username during the account provisioning phase so your network id from CAS would map to a user-selected username? Normally I would say connect to LDAP and grab the person's e-mail and use that as a username, but you will be unable to grab info about people who are FERPA supressed. The only way around this is to get a special LDAP account. However, since this isn't a university sponsored project, chances of that happening are slim to none. --Gregory.Szorc 19:00, September 23, 2005 (EDT)

Right now there is no "provisioning phase" - we don't maintain any information about users other than a small table (command-line maintained) which says which users are admins and who is banned. Since we are using CAS, there is no way to talk to LDAP at all. As a non-sponsored project, we can't get our own LDAP credentials. And the usual technique of using the user's id and password to access LDAP won't work, since we never have the user's password. I suppose we could add an 'initial setup' step a la Blog@Case, where, the first time you log in, you choose a 'display name'. It will be considered as a future improvement. --Andrew.Witte 12:23, September 30, 2005 (EDT)

I have decided to implement an 'initial login setup screen' where users will get to pick their own name. Network IDs will probably still be used in URLs. Is that allowed? --Andrew.Witte 23:04, September 30, 2005 (EDT)

[edit] USG/UPB Integration

Some integration with the USG and/or UPB event calendars has been proposed. One idea is to offer a way for student organizations to easily export their event calendar information into the "Flyers" section of the screensaver. They would have a choice of uploading their own flyer image, or having one generated for them (ImageMagick on the server side). --Andrew.Witte 23:37, September 30, 2005 (EDT)
