[edit] Note Taking Software
[edit] OneNote
- Mac Users: It is possible that OneNote may be included in the next release of Office 2008, but is currently not included.
[edit] Useful Tips
There are many useful functions built-in to the OneNote program. To try some of the ones below, make sure you have opened OneNote at least once and that there is a small purplish OneNote icon in your taskbar (bottom right). Note: The Microsoft key is the button on your keyboard in the bottom left corner with the Windows logo. It is used to activate many functions in OneNote.
- Screen Capture - Microsoft Button + S - Allows you to capture whatever is on your screen and automatically puts a copy of it in OneNote. Take multiple screenshots in a row and they all are automatically sorted in OneNote.
- Note: You can change the options for Screen Capture by right clicking on the OneNote icon in your taskbar, clicking Options, then Screen Clipping Defaults, and select your preference.
- Open OneNote Shortcut - Microsoft Button + Shift + N
- Change OneNote Backgrounds - On the right, where you have the option of adding a New Page, click on the small down arrow and select "More Template Choices and Options...". You can then add a single page of a certain type or set the default template (College Ruled - Blank is being used in the example below).
[edit] Printing to OneNote
A very useful function of OneNote is the ability to print PowerPoint slides (both PPT and PDF) into OneNote directly, which allows you to take notes alongside the image of the slide. For example, see the screenshot below. In addition, OneNote scans the imported images and then all the text can be searched later using the Search (Cntrl+F). That way, all your notes can be kept in one location! Works for other file types too!
- Instructions for Printing to OneNote
- Note: I recommend going through and adding the Case Printers first, see instructions above.
- Click on the Microsoft Logo in the bottom right corner (What used to be the Start Button)
- Select the Printers Option (Under Default Programs)
- A window will pop up. In the blue bar along the top (Vista), select "Add a Printer"
- Another window will pop up. Select "Add a local printer"
- Make sure "Use an existing port" is selected. From the pull-down menu, select: "Send to Microsoft OneNote Port: (Local Port)"
- From the Printers List, select Lexmark>Lexmark T630 PS (MS). Note: Any printer will work, but I've used this one and it works.
- Select "Use the Driver that is currently installed (recommended). Click Next.
- Give the printer a name or leave it as is. Hit Next. The drivers will install and then it will bring you back to the list of printers.
- IMPORTANT: Switch to Onenote. Click Help in the top toolbar and then click "Office Diagnostics...". Hit Continue and then Run Diagnostics. Allow the program to finish checking all the diagnostics.
- You should be all set to print to OneNote by selecting it as the printer when you hit "Print" from any application.
- Printing Slide
- When printing a PDF or PPT of slides to OneNote, you may notice that it sends the slides in the original size. To make them more manageable (such as those shown in the example below), I recommend shrinking them down. To do this:
- Hit Print from the application you are using.
- Select "Send to Microsoft OneNote" as your printer.
- Click on the "Properties" Button.
- Change Page Size to "Custom Size" (Assumes you added OneNote using the Lexmark T630 drivers described in the instructions above, may be different for other printers)
- Try 40% of the original size, which is a width of 3.9 inches, and a height of 3 inches. Leave in Portrait mode.
- Print the document and see if it goes to OneNote and comes out with the right size and orientation.
- To move all the PowerPoint slides at once, such as to move them to the right as in the example below, when in OneNote and looking at the slides, Hit Control+A (Select All) and then drag them over to where you want them.
- When printing a PDF or PPT of slides to OneNote, you may notice that it sends the slides in the original size. To make them more manageable (such as those shown in the example below), I recommend shrinking them down. To do this:
[edit] Journler - Macintosh
Journler is available for free (donation) download here.
This software is designed for bloggers, but has many advantages as a tool for organizing and referencing notes and other documents. Like iTunes, it maintaines a single library of all of your notes files, but allows you to create various paths to files in the form of Smart Folders according to date, category, tag, title, etc.
Other advantages:
- Search function
- Ability to insert documents and hyperlinks into the body of the text
- Audio and video recording capability
Disadvantages:
- Poor formatting and text editing
- No ability to annotate documents (e.g. Powerpoints)
[edit] Notebook - Macintosh
Notebook is available for download (30 day trial, $29.95 Academic License) here.
[edit] Omni Outliner - Macintosh
Omni Outliner is included with your Mac. Look for it in your Applications folder.
[edit] Web Browsers
- If you haven't already, please download and install Mozilla Firefox here, which is a much more secure program than Internet Explorer. In addition, you can add add-ins like the ones described below:
[edit] Recommended Add-Ins
- Download Status Bar - Keeps your downloads organized in the bottom row instead of a pop-up window.
- PDF Reader - Good for viewing/reading articles. Allows you to open in Acrobat instead of web browser.
- Foxy Tunes - Another must have. Allows you to control iTunes from your web browser. No more switching windows!
