[edit] Electromagnetics Competition

The Case Project Club will be hosting an Electromagnetics Competition this semester!

The competition will involve building a coil gun, essentially just a loop of wire wound around a barrel. The gun will launch projectiles when a large current (~1000 amps) is dumped into the coil.

For safety reasons, the competition will be divided into two classes, which have their energies and voltages capped:

  • Novice - 40 Volts, 100 Joules of stored energy
  • Expert - 500 Volts, 1000 Joules of stored energy

The grand prize for each class will be $100 in cash!

This competition is open to ANY student, graduate or undergraduate, and all materials will be provided or bought by the Case Project Club (within reason, of course).

An Introductory Guide has been written by Edwin Burwell.

The informational meeting will be on Tuesday the 28th of February, 2006 in Olin 101, and afterwards we will be going to have an electromagnetics demonstration as described below.

Note: Finalized rules will be posted soon.

Pizza and soda will be provided, and we will be demonstrating coil guns, Jacob's Ladders, disc launchers, and a huge Tesla Coil!

Come on out, it should be fun!
