[edit] General network policies

[edit] IT Services Ethics Policy

This document is located at http://tiswww.case.edu/phone/phonebook/local/ITS-Ethics.html. It establishes the right of the university to set access policies for computers and services. If users do not act in a responsible matter, access may be revoked. Acceptable use is ethical and shows restraint in the consumption of shared resources. Disciplinary actions for inappropriate use can occur both inside and outside the university.

[edit] ITS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

This document is located at http://www.case.edu/its/security/docs/aup.htm . It sets basic standards for the use of Case's network and IT services - such use should be respectful to others and should not detract from the University's ability to perform its mission. It also states that "there is no inherent expectation of privacy for information stored on Case information technology resources".

[edit] General Case network policies

This document (http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/general.html) enumerates the types of network devices that are not permitted to be connected to the Case network.

[edit] Policy Regarding Providing Network Interface Cards

This document is located at http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/nic.html. It states that ITS will not provide Ethernet cards to Case users. It also describes the type of network card that users should purchase, but this information is out of date.

[edit] Use of Wireless Networking at Case

According to http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/wireless.html, users may not set up their own wireless networks. Instead, Case's Wireless Network should be used.

[edit] Operating Systems Policy

According to http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/os.html, the Linux, Windows 2000, and Windows ME operating systems are not officially supported by ITS.

[edit] Network protocols, services, names and numbers policies

[edit] Banned programs, services, and protocols

This policy is located at http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/banned-sw.html. It defines programs, services, and protocols that are banned on the Case network.

The document contains some questionable items, however. For instance, it bans programs and services that make use of multicast, citing overloading of the 10Mbps network. This reason is not applicable any more, and thus raises the question of whether multicast is still banned. Also, there is also a ban on programs that heavily make use of broadcast packets. In the early days of CWRUNet, the entire network was one large broadcast tree consisting of hundreds of nodes. That meant that a broadcast packet would propogate through the entire network. Now, each building is roughly contained in a subnet and the network is faster. Many newer protocols, such as ZeroConf make heavy use of broadcast packets, so it is unsure why this is still in the banned list.

[edit] Hostnames

This policy is located at http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/hostnames.html. Every computer on the Wired Network must have a hostname. The university maintains the right to change your hostname. When machines are registered to the network, they will be assigned a generic hostname. Specific hostnames may be requested via an online form. Your computer MUST use the hostname it is assigned. Machines registered in the Case network can not be a member of another domain (i.e. you can't register www.yourname.com to point to a machine on the Case network). Hostnames must also comply with all university policies, so offensive hostnames may result in possible sanctions.

[edit] Personal e-mail aliases

This policy is defined at http://tiswww.case.edu/net/policy/personalaliases.html. Users may assign up to 5 e-mail aliases. Aliases are rewarded on a first-come first-served basis. Aliases must not be offensive. Aliases are only available to active university members. Upon leaving the university, aliases will be terminated.
