Master Plan

The Master Plan is the strategic plan adopted by Case Western Reserve University. The first master plan was adopted in 1988 and involved the investment of more than $350 million in capital improvements. On May 12, 2001, Case Western Reserve University approved a second master plan after over fifteen months of meetings and discussions between the Board of Trustees and Case community. The plan was developed by The Baltimore firm Ayers Saint Gross in conjunction with the office of Kenneth Kutina, vice president of institutional planning.

The Master Plan calls for the development and renovation of facilities for academic programs as well as a new student residential space. The plan has an estimated cost of $500 million and envisions a campus that is more integrated with the University's neighboring communities and institutions. .

Case Western Reserve University strives to be the most powerful learning environment in the world. We seek to have transformational impact on all who teach, learn, discover and work here so they are prepared and engaged to serve humanity. As a great research university, we must embrace responsible risk-taking in pursuit of bold aspirations for national and global leadership.

[edit] Northside Changes

  • What is going to happen to the existing dorms?
  • Concentrate all undergraduate housing on the north side of campus by constructing new residence halls and creating a fraternity and sorority row

[edit] Southside Changes

  • Why the move to have everyone on northside?
The goal to move everyone to the NRV is intended to encourage
a greater sense of community among undergraduates.
  • What will southside be used for?
Convert south-campus residence halls into apartment-style housing for graduate, professional, and married students
  • Will southside be closed?
  • What will happen to the southside buildings?
  • Why are there still people in southside?
In the 2005-2006 school year, there are people in southside
for two reasons. 1) 90% of undergrads are living on campus,
up from 80% in last year. Word has it that this is because
more upperclassmen have chosen to stay on campus in the
Village at 115 rather than moving off campus. 2) This
year's freshmen class is larger than past classes. Some
of the people in southside are freshmen in singles.
  • Will they be there next year?
It's not considered ideal to either put freshmen in singles
or to have the freshmen class split over the NRV and southside.
So, the current plan is to put sophomores in southside.
  • What is happening with Adelbert Bridge?

[edit] Greek Life Changes

A new Greek Village is a significant component of the Master Plan. The tentative location of the new Greek Village will be in available areas scattered along the west side of the North Residential Village, including spaces by Alpha Phi, Theta Chi, and Clarke Tower. As of March 2006, the plans for construction of the village are on hold indefinitely due to inadequate funding.

[edit] Case Quad Changes

The grand master plan calls for the opening of the south side of the Case Quad. Crawford Hall, Tomlinson Hall, and Yost Hall will be razed, presenting a direct view of downtown Cleveland.

Tearing down Crawford Hall probably won't occur for some time. First, all employees in the building will need to be relocated. ITS is planning on moving most of its work force to the Halle Building in downtown Cleveland. They constitute the bulk of workers in Crawford Hall. One technical obstruction to the demolition of Crawford Hall is the abundance of networking infrastructure passing through the building. Crawford Hall is the fiber hub of the campus. Underneath the building lie the core routers. It would actually take more money to relocate the fiber hub than to completely rebuild a similar building where Crawford Hall stands now.

Yost Hall, as one of the oldest buildings on the Case Quad makes a relatively easy target for demolition. However, there are numerous offices in that building, which means first relocating everyone.
