It is possible to integrate the address book in many popular programs with the university's LDAP service. This will allow you to forego using the Phonebook to look up e-mail addresses.

This article has instructions for configuring applications to use the university's LDAP service for address lookup and searching.

  1. From the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts
  2. Click Add a new directory or address book
  3. Click Next
  4. Select Internet Directory Service (LDAP) and click Next
  5. In the Server Name box, type ldap.case.edu
  6. Click the More Settings button
  7. Click the Search tab
  8. In the Search base box, enter ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp
  9. Click the Apply button
  10. Click OK and click Next
  11. To use Directory in Outlook, create a new e-mail message
  12. In the To field, type the name of a person
  13. Click the Check names button at the top

[edit] Outlook Express

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Accounts
  2. Select Directory Services
  3. Enter ldap.cwru.edu and click Next, Yes, and Next
  4. Click Properties for the newly created directory service
  5. Click Advanced
  6. In the Searh Base box type ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp

[edit] Thunderbird

The following instructions are valid for Thunderbird 1.5.

  1. Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences
  2. In the new window that is opened, there are a row of icons with settings in the bottom part of the window. Click the Composition icon
  3. Below the icon row, there should be some tabs. Click the Addressing tab.
  4. Make sure the Directory Server box is checked.
  5. Click the Edit Directories button that is enabled when the Directory Server box is checked
  6. Click the Add button
  7. In the General tab, fill out the values to match the following:
    • Name: Case Directory
    • Hostname: ldap.case.edu
    • Base DN: ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp
    • Port Number: 389
    • Bind DN: Leave this line blank
  8. Click the OK button to save the changes
  9. Click OK in the LDAP Directory Servers list to save the new entry
  10. Verify that Case Directory is selected in the Directory Server list in the preferences window
  11. Click Close to exit the preferences window

[edit] Apple Address Book

  1. From the Address Book menu, choose Preferences
  2. Click the LDAP button
  3. Click + button at the bottom of the window
  4. Enter the following settings:
    • Name: Case
    • Server: ldap.cwru.edu
    • Search base: ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp
  5. Click Save
  6. Close the preferences window

[edit] Evolution

  1. From the File menu, choose New, then Address book
  2. Select On LDAP Servers the type
  3. Enter Case as the name, and ldap.case.edu as the server.
  4. On the Details tab, enter ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp as the Search Base
  5. For Search Scope, select Sub
  6. Click OK

[edit] The Bat!

  1. From the Tools menu, select Address Book
  2. In the Address Book window select New Address Book from the File menu
  3. Enter Case LDAP as the Name and click the Change button and create a new file to store the book in
  4. Switch to the LDAP tab and check This Address Book is Associated with an LDAP Server
  5. Enter ldap.case.edu as the address, use port 389
  6. Enter ou=People,o=cwru.edu,o=isp as the Search Base
  7. Set Return Maximum to 100 and Search Timeout to 30
  8. Click OK
