IPTV
IPTV is the set of services that provide video signals over an Internet2 connection. The IPTV service offered by ITS currently has eight channels available. It looks like most channels are streaming around 1500k/s. There are four channels which require authentication in the portal for viewing: CNBC, Bravo, SciFi and MSNBC. The Open Student Television Network (OSTN) Channel, OSTN F&S (Faculty and Staff), ResearchChannel, The NASA Channel and C-Span are not protected by DRM.

[edit] Accessing Case's IPTV service
Case Western provides an IPTV service in partnership with the Open Student Television Network (OSTN). The Case IPTV service is accessed through the Case Portal. Sign in using your Case Network ID. Go to the Entertainment page. If you haven't customized the layout, it should be the third tab. The IPTV module is enabled by default.
[edit] Off-Campus Users
The portal player works from anywhere, but it will take off-campus users anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to load or change streams due to its default multicast protocol with unicast rollover. You will need a wired, cable broadband connection or better for a smooth viewing experience. You may also need to have the VPN client running if you are behind a corporate firewall or proxy. If you are using Windows or Macintosh, you may need to start the VPN client prior to visiting the portal page.
[edit] Known Issues
I'm using Linux and I can't get IPTV to work. At this time, there is no Windows Media codec for Linux that is compatible with the digital rights management software used by the protected OSTN System channels. Further, the Linux codecs for Windows Media formats do not currently work for the streaming Windows Media formats. It is recommended that you dual-boot into Windows or use virtualization software.
When I try to change channels, nothing happens. It will take off-campus users 30 seconds to 5 minutes to load/change streams due to the multicast nature of the channels - if you are not on a multicast-enabled port, it takes a while for it to rollover to unicast.
My browser crashes when I open the page with the IPtV viewer. Your browser is probably out-of-date. Update it to the latest release. Firefox users: Versions 1.5.0.2-1.5.0.5 had a bug that would cause the browser to crash when viewing (live) Windows Media streams. This has been fixed in the latest version.
The picture stops updating when I scroll the page or switch tabs. This affects Firefox users. Unfortunately, current versions of Firefox don't fully support Windows Media streams. You will need to reload the page. If that does not work, you will have to restart the browser.
[edit] Frequently Asked Questions
I'm not affiliated with Case Western. How can I access Case's IPTV service? You can't. The OSTN feeds are only available to students and faculty at OSTN member institutions such as Case Western. The Case IPTV service re-distributes these feeds to students and faculty through the internal Case network. Any further such requests made to this page or the Discussion page will be deleted without response.
How do I access the streams or the IPTV module from off-campus without logging in? You can't. For technical and legal reasons, you must log in to the Case network to access Case's IPTV service.
I'm a Case alum and I am unable to view the streams from my Case portal page. The IPTV module is a work in progress. It may not currently be configured for use with alumni network IDs.
I am a Case student. Can I upload the streams to other internet television sites or applications for other people to watch them? No, the channels have granted OSTN a license to stream their content only to persons affiliated with their member institutions. As such, even if the streams are freely available elsewhere on the internet, the OSTN and its member institutions cannot freely distribue the streams under license. If you attempt to redistribute this content, your access to the OSTN feeds will be revoked by ITS.
