[edit] MediaWiki Structure / Terminology

[edit] Pages

The Case Wiki is composed of numerous individual pages. In this wiki, a "page" is also a "topic". The two terms can and will be used interchangeably through the rest of this document.

[edit] Namespaces

A namespace is a collection of related pages. This wiki has the following namespaces. They are:

  • Main (the default namespace)
  • CaseWiki (provides info about this wiki)
  • User (location for user's pages)
  • Image (location for all uploaded images)
  • MediaWiki (location for internal MediaWiki messages)
  • Template (holds templates for use on pages)
  • Help (provides help for using the wiki)
  • Category (holds category information)

In some wikis, namespaces are used as the primary means for organizing pages together. MediaWiki does not take the liberal approach to namespace creation that other wikis do. Instead, pages are organized mainly by categories.

[edit] Templates

Templates are pages which can be inserted into other pages. See CaseWiki:Templates for a listing of templates and information on how to use them.

[edit] Categories

Categories are ways of organizing related pages/topics within a namespace. When a page is part of a category, a link will usually appear to that category's main page. This page can be edited, but it will almost always contain a list of sub-categories and topics that are part of that category.

For a list of categories on the Case Wiki, see Special:Categories.

[edit] Links

Links are what tie individual pages in the wiki to each other and to the internet. Links are pointers to resources available on the internet. A general rule of thumb is create as many links as possible when editing a page. In general, the following link types are supported by MediaWiki

  • To another Case Wiki topic
  • To another Wiki's topic
  • To any site that has a URL
