[edit] Not Linking Topics

When writing an article, it is simple to just write to your heart's content without thinking about linking your article to any other page in the wiki. Although the content could be excellent, people might have a difficult time finding your article if it doesn't contain links to other wiki topics.

Before completing an article, it is recommended to complete the following steps:

  1. Scan your article for any keywords or phrases that might represent Case Wiki (or even WikiPedia) topics. Turn these keywords or phrases into links.
  2. View the articles to which you linked and add links back to your newly modified document, if possible.

Articles that do not link to any page in this wiki are listed at Special:Lonelypages. These articles, although findable by doing a site search, may not be indexed by search engines because no links point to them. This is why step 2 above is recommended.

[edit] Personal Page is Misplaced

Some individuals might be inclined to start a personal page which more or less serves as an autobiography. If you click on your username in the top right of any page (you must be logged in to see it), you will be taken to a page in the User namespace. To quote WikiPedia:Wikipedia:Namespace, "The user namespace is a namespace that provides pages for Wikipedia users' personal presentations and auxiliary pages for personal use, for example containing bookmarks to favorite pages." In this wiki, the user namespace also provides some enhancements over other namespaces. When you visit a page in the user namespace (see User:Gregory.szorc for an example), RSS and ATOM feeds for that user's latest wiki actions are available. These links are not made automatically available outside of the user namespace.

Putting personal pages in the user namespace has one drawback: searching. By default, searches do not cover the user namespace. However, for users of this wiki, your default account preferences search the user namespace by default.

There are a few times when it is OK to place a person's entry in the default namespace. They are:

  1. When the person is not a member of the wiki (e.g. not actively affiliated with the university)
  2. When the person has not created a wiki account (full list at Special:Listusers).
  3. When the entry serves as a historical record rather than a personal portal. For example, Edward M. Hundert, although he could be a user of this wiki, deserves an entry in the main namespace because of his affiliation with the university. If he did use this wiki, his User namespace page would be where he put personal info about himself.

[edit] Not Previewing Before Saving

When editing a page, it is possible to preview the page before saving it. You just click the Show preview, which is directly next to the Save page button on the edit page. The preview page is a full rendered version of your edit followed by the edit box. Making multiple edits because you made a mistake is unprofessional because it clutters the recent changes list.

[edit] Content on Category Pages

Category pages should not contain content beyond describing the purpose of the category. It is perfectly acceptable to create an article and category with the same title, but please put all content in the defaut namespace.

One can easily link to the main namespace article of the same name by using the catmore template. To use, type the following:

{{catmore}}
