[edit] Using Categories
A main method for organizing content is by using categories. An individual topic may belong to zero, one, or infinite numbers of categories. A category can also belong to zero, one, or infinite numbers of categories. The possibilities for organizing information are limitless.
It is good practice to assign a newly created page to at least one category. The wiki automatically maintains a list of categories. If a category does not exist, it will be automatically created when the page is saved.
To assign a page to a category, include the word "Category" followed by a colon followed by the category name inside double square brackets anywhere in the edit box.
What you type:
What you see: nothing
Example, to assign an entry for Adelbert Hall to the category Buildings, write
anywhere in the edit box for the topic.
It is preferred that category assignments follow the page content.
To link to a category without actually assigning the topic to a category, precede the word Category with a colon.
What you type::Category:Category Name
What you see: Category:Category Name
For example::Category:Buildings
is displayed as: Category:Buildings
This can optionally be shorted with the pipe character as follows:
Buildings
is displayed as: Buildings
[edit] Category Hierarchy
It is possible to make categories themselves part of another category. This makes it possible to establish a hierarchy of categorization. For example, take the People category. This category has multiple sub-categories, including Students and Staff. If you are composing your biography on your user page, there is no need to assign your article to the People and the Students category. Since Students is a subcategory of People, assigning the article to the Students subcategory will automatically place you within the realm of People. At the bottom of the article, the category browser will display the hierarchy of categories to which you belong.
[edit] Making a Category a Sub-Category
To make a category a sub-category of another category, you assign the Category article (the article in the Category namespace) to the parent category as you would a normal article. For example Category:Students contains a category assignment to Category:People.
[edit] Categories and Semantics
It is possible to organize content via the category and semantic features of this wiki. When assigning a category, the category assigned should be the equivalent of an is a relationship. In other words, if assigning article X to category Y, if the answer to if X is a Y is true, then use a category. Else, use a semantic relation.
Consider categorization related to location. The article in question is about a restaurant in Little Italy. You could assign an article to the Little Italy category, but what you are really trying to say is that the restaurant is located in Little Italy. The proper way to handle this is to categorize the article under the Restaurants category and add the located in relation to Little Italy. The basic article content would be:
This restaurant is located in::Little Italy.
