[edit] GAHA (Graduate Art History Association)

GAHA was founded in September 2004 as an organization whose purpose is the following: "To promote the scholarship of art history by facilitating relationships among art history graduate students, the art history faculty, the campus community and University Circle Institutions."

GAHA holds meetings at least once per month. The purpose of these meetings is to inform graduate students of upcoming events and to give them opportunity to voice their questions, concerns and suggestions regarding the Art History and the Art History/Museum Studies graduate programs. A GAHA representative is present at the beginning of each faculty meeting to relay these questions and concerns to the Art History Department faculty.

In addition to meetings, monthly GAHA social events provide students with time to discuss current research projects, recent campus events and the local Cleveland art scene.

[edit] Resume and CV Workshop Notes

Career Center/Sears Room 206 http://studentaffairs.case.edu/careers/ Patrick Keebler, Career Center Assist. Director 368-4446/pjk17@case.edu Notes from Resume and CV Workshop, March 19, 2007 Career Center Sears Room 206 • Career counseling • Job search (both academic and other jobs) • Many workshop offerings • Copy of the Career Search Guide publication available at the office, and also downloadable from the Career Center website

Differences Between CVs and Resumes • CV is related to the interests of academia – also appropriate for some museum jobs (curator, assistant curator, director; 2 or 3 pages for beginners – can be several pages later in your career • Resume is used for industry/business/non-profit – might be used for museum jobs (education, registrar, development, etc.); 1 or 2 pages • Easiest to build a CV first, and then extract material for a condensed resume

Guidelines for CVs • Provide relevant information, tailored to your potential job, and feature that information so it is easily grasped by the reader • Compile and organize the CV with your reader in mind • Make your CV a live document; keep it up-to-date with current information • No more than eight lines of descriptive information per job • 1-inch margins, but 1 ½ inch margins are even better (more white space for prospective employer to make notes) • Be consistent with formatting throughout – i.e. if you bold place of employment and italicize your job title, do the same for all jobs • List language skills prominently with your level of fluency • CAA (College Art Association) is useful for learning appropriate categories for a CV, but not the best source for CV examples

Experience Heading of CVs • List jobs in reverse chronological order • If you have both teaching and museum experience, it might be beneficial to list them as separate headings (but only if you have more than one of each type of experience); in other words, sectionalize types of experience • Give a very brief description of your responsibilities and accomplishments – make certain this highlights your strengths and not just job duties or being descriptive (focus on your action and the result of your action in that position) • Place dates of your education and experiences to the right margin of the page

Optional Areas/Headings • Major fields of scholarly interest – but only use if applicable to the job • List your professional affiliations near the beginning of your CV • University Service/Activities/Leadership (committees, leadership) • Teaching competencies • Areas of expertise • Related coursework • You can list hobbies, which demonstrates you have a life beyond art history

Presentations and Publications • Papers and presentations for class do not count – only those at conferences or published papers • This heading should be near the end of your document • Read the job vacancy announcement carefully and tailor your CV to emphasize your most relevant experiences

References • For both CVs and Resumes, a List of References is always a separate document • You may need to submit Letters of Reference for some positions; encourage your recommenders to tailor their letters to the position or institution and that they are not just generic letters • When asking for a Letter of Reference, try to ask your recommenders one month in advance. If you find out about a job last-minute, let your recommenders know that.

Guidelines for Cover Letters • 1 page to 1 ½ pages – your potential employer does not need or desire a novel from you • Match your skills and qualities to the job description • Do your homework; read about the institution or museum – expectations are now higher because with the Internet, information is more widely available • Express your interest in the institution or museum • Communicate enthusiasm • If including a writing sample, provide a brief synopsis in your cover letter
