[edit] Google Apps for Case Western Reserve University
Information Technology Services has teamed up with Google to offer Google Apps for Case Western Reserve University, a new collaboration suite of services that includes a web start page, mail, calendar, instant messaging, shared documents, and sites (similar to a wiki) for the University.
See the Google Apps Home Page for more information and step-by-step instructions as how to set up your Google Apps mailbox.
See the Google Apps FAQ for more information or visit the provisioning page to activate your case.edu Google Apps account.
[edit] Web access to Email
Since the previous webmail interface was discontinued in 2010, Google Apps email has been the only webmail interface offered at Case. The Google Apps email service offers a newer web interface, access to the other suite services, and a 7+ GB mailbox - much larger than the previous Case web mailbox, which offered only 200MB of storage.
Members of the university community can access their Google Apps webmail by going to webmail.case.edu[1] and signing on with Single_Sign_On.
This discussion of Security Considerations provides guidance for ensuring SSL (secure sockets layer) access to GoogleApps.
[edit] Need to create a Google Apps password
All Google Apps users need to set up a separate Google Apps password. This password should not be the same as your Case password. Please use a robust password (minimum of 8 characters, upper and lower case, and a number).
[edit] Web Access to the Google Calendar
The Google Apps Calendar is a similar web-enabled calendar utility that is integrated into the Case GoogleApps environment. The key to the calendar is you can keep events private, share them with other Case GA users, and even delegate the calendar to a work associate.
The Calendar can be accessed from the webmail.case.edu area by checking the topmost menu for "Calendar". It can also be accessed directly via http://webcalendar.case.edu/.
[edit] Client Access to the Google Calendar & Contacts
Google has various access options including sync functions for a calendar client, including importing and exporting a calendar which allows a calendar client to view it in 'read-only' mode, or via a CalDAV connection for Apple iCal or Mozilla Sunbird (Outlook and Entourage don't yet support the CalDAV protocol). There is a recently released Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook to sync Email, Calendar, and Contacts with Microsoft Outlook for Windows. Users may manually export contacts from other programs or webmail to import into Google Apps, and export contacts from Google Apps for use in clients and other webmail services. You may also check out other solutions for syncing at the Google Solutions Marketplace.
