Freedman Center:Slide Scanning

  1. Turn on the Nikon CoolScan V ED.
  2. Insert the slide into the Nikon CoolScan V ED with the emulsion (dull) side down.
    • Also make sure to insert the slide film window such that it is positioned vertically instead of horizontally. This will ensure that all parts of the photo on the slide will be scanned.
  3. Open Adobe Photoshop CS2, located in the Scanning Software Folder on the desktop.
  4. Open Nikon Scan 4.0 through Adobe Photoshop CS2 (File -> Import -> Nikon Scan 4.0).
  5. Click the teal Preview button to preview the scan.
  6. Click the purple Tools button -> Tool Palette 1 to bring up Tool Palette 1.
    • Uncheck (X's are unchecked) Curves, Color Balance, Unsharp Mask, and LCH Editor.
    • Digital ICE removes dust and scratches from scans of damaged slides; leave this on Normal unless scanning a glass-mounted slide (this feature does not work on glass-mounted slides).
    • Digital ROC restores faded or lost colors on scans of damaged slides; leave this on 0 (off) since this can be corrected later using the Levels function in Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Image -> Adjustments -> Levels).
    • Digital GEM removes grain from scans of slides; since Digital GEM is a powerful tool, leave this on 4 unless time is an issue (enabling Digital GEM will add a considerable amount of time to the actual scanning; lowering this value will decrease the additional scanning time required).
    • Digital DEE brings detail out of shadows and reduces hot spots on scans of slides; leave this box unchecked because this can also be done using the Shadow/Highlight function in Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Image -> Adjustments -> Shadow/Highlight).
  7. Click the green Scan button to scan the slide.
  8. When the scan is finished and the resulting document appears in Photoshop, close the Nikon Scan 4.0 window. *Note: You will not be able to manipulate the document unless the Nikon window has been closed.
  9. Save the image as a JPEG file (*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe) (File -> Save As).
    • A JPEG image of quality 12 will be saved uncompressed; saving the image at any quality level less than 12 will result in quality loss and a smaller file size.
  10. Adobe Photoshop CS2 can now be used to edit and save the image as desired.
