Freedman Center:Scanning Transparent Media

  1. In order to scan transparent media (i.e. MRI film, x-rays, etc.), the transparent media adapter needs to be connected to the ScanMaker 9800XL; this can be checked out at the front desk and connected by Freedman Center staff.
  2. Turn on the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL; the power switch is located on the back of the scanner, in the lower right corner.
  3. Place the transparent media into the scanner right-side up, with the top of the media towards the front of the scanner.
    • Make sure, however, to leave the clear strip at the front of the scanner bed unobstructed. This is used to calibrate the scanner.
  1. Open Adobe Photoshop CS2, located in the Scanning Software Folder on the desktop.
  2. Open Microtek ScanWizard Pro through Adobe Photoshop CS2 (File -> Import -> Microtek ScanWizard Pro).
  3. Select the film setting in the Preferences menu (Preferences -> Scan Material -> Negative/Positive/...etc. Film).
  4. Click the Overview button (rather than the Prescan button) to preview the scan.
    • The red/white bordered box in the preview pane indicates what section of the document will be scanned; it can be moved and resized as needed.
    • Use the arrow buttons to move each side or all of the crop box.
  5. The Settings window provides several options which are used to change the scan, including Type (the color profile), Resolution, and Scaling.
  6. Click the Scan button to scan the document.
  7. Close the Microtek ScanWizard Pro window.
  8. Save the image as a JPEG file (*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe) (File -> Save As).
    • A JPEG image of quality 12 will be saved uncompressed; saving the image at any quality level less than 12 will result in quality loss and a smaller file size.
  9. Adobe Photoshop CS2 can now be used to edit and save the image as desired.
