Freedman Center/Microfiche Scanning
- Lift up the port cover on the computer next to the microfilm reader.
- Place the security key in the USB port.
- Turn on the Canon Microfilm Scanner 800.
- Push the Roll/Fiche Carrier 200 (labeled as such) as far back as it will go; this will leave the fiche carrier exposed (the black metal plate in the front left corner with the handle and piece of glass).
- Slide the fiche carrier to the left, and then pull it forward until the glass plate lifts up.
- Place the microfiche under the glass plate with the title bar facing down and along the back of the glass plate.
- Push the fiche carrier back until the glass plate shuts on the microfiche, and then slide the fiche carrier under the lens (the edge of the fiche carrier will slide the lens up onto the glass plate, so a slight force will be needed to push the fiche carrier under the lens).
- Align the microfiche under the lens.
- Center the specific page to be captured between the 11x17/LTR and center black arrow indicators on the screen of the MS 800.
- The Zoom/Focus/Rotate wheel located in the lower right corner of the viewer can be used to create a cleaner image.
The Zoom/Focus/Rotate function can be selected by pressing the appropriate button (the button will light up green) and then turning the wheel accordingly; turning the wheel to the right will increase the size of the image, tighten the focus on the image, or spin the image in a clockwise fashion (turning it to the left will decrease the size of the image, loosen the focus on the image, or spin the image in a counterclockwise fashion. - Once the image on the viewer is satisfactory, create a new PDF using the MS 800 in Adobe Acrobat (File -> Create PDF -> From Scanner).
- Open Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional from the desktop or the Start menu.
- If you want the scanner to convert the document into fully editable text, check the "Recognize Text Using OCR" box in the "Create PDF from Scanner" dialog box.
- Click Scan to bring up the "Configure Device Settings" dialog box.
- Leave the default page size as "Letter - 8.5 x 11 in." If this does not capture the desired area of the document, scan again and reset the page size to "11X17" or "Scanner Maximum."
- Click OK to bring up the "Canon MS 800 on SCSI 2" scanning dialog box.
- Click Preview Scan to view a preview of the image.
- Several scanning options, including brightness, contrast, and resolution can be set in this window.
- To ensure accurate image scanning, select "Letter - 8.5 x 11 in" as the page size in this window.
- Click Scan to scan the image.
- A warning will appear alerting you to the fact that there is no film in the scanner; however, this is a digital scan that needs no film, so click OK.
- Once the scan is complete, another warning will appear alerting you to position the film image on the scanner and to scan again. If the previous scan options produced a satisfactory scan, moving the fiche carrier to find another image and clicking OK will append the new image to the old in the PDF as the next page of the file; new pages will be added in this manner until you click Cancel. If you want to change the previous scan options, click Cancel.
- In the "Canon MS 800 on SCSI 2" scanning dialog box, another image can be captured with different scanning options.
- Click Cancel to exit the "Canon MS 800 on SCSI 2" scanning dialog box when the scanning process is complete.
- Adobe Acrobat will bring up one final box asking you if you want to append another page to the PDF. If you still want to add another page to the file, click Next in the "Adobe Scan" dialog box to restart this process; otherwise, click Done to finish the scanning and view the PDF.
- At this point, you can click File -> Save As to save the PDF or File -> Print to print the PDF.
