Freedman Center:Mac Flatbed Scanning

[edit] Flatbed Scanning for Macintosh

Summary: the basic process is to import the image from the scanner into Photoshop, save the photo, then edit if desired.

  1. Turn on the scanner if it is not already on.
    • It will take about two minutes to boot up and be recognized by the computer.
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop CS on the Dock Menu Panel
  3. Click on File - Import - Microtek ScanWizard 5.
    • Microtek ScanWizard will launch.
    • The scanner will automatically generate a preview image.
  4. Choose your options.
    • You can adjust DPI by choosing Purpose - Custom - and manually entering the DPI.
    • There is usually no reason to go over 300 DPI.
  5. Press Scan to scan the image. You will hear the scanner internals initializing.
  6. The image will be imported into Photoshop. You can close the Microtek ScanWizard.
  7. It is a good idea to save a copy of your file before editing to prevent any lost work.
    • Click on File - Save to save the image.
    • TIFF and JPEG are your two most likely choices.
      • TIFF is uncompressed, so the file is great for editing but very large.
      • JPEG is for final presentation, often on the web, or for use in Word or PowerPoint, and is much smaller. You generally only want to save a final completed work in JPEG.
