Freedman Center:Flatbed Scanning

  1. Turn on the Microtek ScanMaker i700 (Note*: the scanner is ready to use when the lights at the front stop flashing).
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop CS2, located in the Scanning Software Folder on the desktop.
  3. Open Microtek ScanWizard 5 through Adobe Photoshop CS2 (File -> Import -> Microtek ScanWizard 5).
  4. Click the Preview button to preview the scan.
    • The red/white bordered box in the preview pane indicates what section of the document will be scanned; it can be moved and resized as needed.
      • Use the arrow buttons to move each side or all of the crop box.
  5. Clicking the Original button allows you to select the type of media that is being scanned.
    • We recommend that you use the "Photo" quality setting for most applications.
  6. Clicking the Scan Type button allows you to select the color mode of the scan (true color, gray, or black and white).
    • We recommend using the "true color" setting. The color data in the scan can be taken out in Photoshop.
  7. Clicking the Purpose button allows you to select the resolution of the scan.
    • We recommend using the "Custom" option for most applications and setting the DPI to at least 400 (minimum for photo-quality resolution).
  8. Click the Scan button to scan the document.
  9. Close the Microtek ScanWizard 5 window (*Note: You will not be able to manipulate the scanned document unless the Microtek software has been closed).
  10. Save the image as a JPEG file (*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe) (File -> Save As).
    • A JPEG image of quality 12 will be saved uncompressed; saving the image at any quality level less than 12 will result in quality loss and a smaller file size.
  11. Adobe Photoshop CS2 can now be used to edit and save the image as desired.
