[edit] Single Song
- Request a record cleaning kit from the front desk.
- Ensure that the record to be converted is clean.
- Place the record onto the turntable.
- Power on the turntable.
- Ensure the turntable source is selected on the black selector box/Sima box.
- Ensure the appropriate speed is selected and start the turntable.
- Open the Nero Wave Editor, located in the Audio Editors Folder on the desktop.
- Click the red Record button in the bottom left corner of the Nero Wave Editor.
- Select the appropriate sample format settings and click OK.
- Checking the "Digital monitoring" box in the Recording Console dialog box will allow sound to come through the analog headphones.
- Click the red Record button under Recording Controls to begin recording.
- Place the stylus (needle) onto the record at the location of the song to be recorded.
- This can be done manually,
- Or, the needle can be cued using the release lever at the base of the arm on the record player.
- When the recording is complete, click the blue Pause button next to the red Record button.
- Click OK in the Recording Console dialog box to view the audio waveform.
- Having the Recording Mode set to "Insert into recording" will place the new audio capture at the end of the active file; having the Recording Mode set to "Overwrite existing recording" will overwrite the active file with the new audio capture.
- Save the audio waveform as a PCM Wave file (*.wav, *.wave) in your personal folder within the "My Documents" folder.
- Close Nero Wave Editor when all desired recordings are completed and saved.
- The audio waveform can now be edited appropriately using the various effects, enhancements, and tools found in the Sound Forge Audio Studio located in the Audio Editors folder on the desktop.
- In Sound Forge open the .wav file containing the song.
- The song will most likely have unnecessary audio data at its beginning and end that will need to be trimmed.
- On a solid recording, the song can generally be visually distinguished from the rest of the captured audio (the audio wave located between two major troughs). If this is not the case, however, the song can be reviewed using the playback features of Sound Forge until a satisfactory trim selection can be made.
- Using the mouse, place the cursor at the vertical midpoint on the waveform where you wish to begin trimming. Left-click with the mouse, selecting BOTH channels of the recording (top and bottom).
- Once the portion to be trimmed has been selected, the Crop feature (Edit -> Crop) will trim the unnecessary audio. Remember to trim both the beginning and the end of the song. (*Note: If you are unsatisfied with your crop, use the Edit -> Undo Crop option in the drop-down menue.)
- At this point, the song should be saved as a PCM Wave file (*.wav, *.wave).
- In order to remove unwanted noise (crack, hiss, pop) from the recording, the Vynyl Restoration feature can be used (Tools -> Vynyl Restoration).
- The Presets drop-down menu in the Vynyl Restoration dialog box has a "General Restoration" setting that should be selected.
- Clicking the Play button under Preview in the Vynyl Restoration dialog box will allow you to hear the song with the Noise Reduction effect; checking the Bypass box and then clicking the Play button under Preview will allow you to hear the original song (without the Noise Reduction effect).
- Clicking the OK button will apply the Noise Reduction features; clicking the Cancel button will return to the audio wave without applying the Noise Reduction features.
- To optimize the audio signal of the song, the "Normalize" feature can also be used. Select the entire song using the cursor, making sure to include BOTH channels. Select the normalization tool from the Process drop-down menu (Process -> Normalize).
- Clicking the Play button under Preview in the Normalize dialog box will allow you to hear the song with the normalization effect; checking the Bypass box and then clicking the Play button under Preview will allow you to hear the original song (without the normalization effect).
- Save the final version of the file as a PCM Wave file (*.wav, *.wave), and then again in a different format (*.mp3 for instance) if desired.
- The PCM Wave files can then be burned to a CD for use in CD audio players, or the mp3 files can be copied to a portable music player.
[edit] Entire Record
- Once the entire side of the record has been captured in Nero Wave Editor as ONE waveform, save the resulting file as a PCM Wave file (*.wav, *.wave). Trim the unnecessary audio data from the beginning of the FIRST song and the end of the LAST song on the waveform.
- Perform vynyl restoration (first) and audio normalization (second) on the entire file, as explained in the previous section.
- When these processes have been performed, each song can then be selected and saved as a separate, individual file.
- Each song file should be saved as a PCM Wave file using Save As (File -> Save As) and named differently than the Wave file that contains the audio wave for the entire side of the record; if it is saved using Save (File -> Save) or with the same name as the Wave file that contains the entire record, all of the other songs will be written over and lost.
- Once a song is saved, the Wave file containing the entire side of the record should be opened so that the next song can be extracted from it using this same process.
- When all of the songs have been saved as individual Wave files, they can then be burned to a CD and/or coverted to MP3s in iTunes.
