[edit] Scanning Transparent Media

  1. Check out a SecuriKey™ and plug it into the port at top of the keyboard to unlock the computer.
  2. No password is required; simply press Enter.
  3. Create yourself a folder in the My Documents folder and label it with your network ID.
  4. Turn on the Epson Expression 10000 XL Scanner with the power button on the front left of the machine.
  5. Remove the white insert according to the directions on the inside cover of the scanner.
  6. Verify the scanner transparency guide is in place.
    • Place transparencies into holder before placing holder in scanner bed, aligned with the transparency guide.
    • If scanning a large transparency, such as an x-ray, no holder is necessary.
  7. To open Photoshop:
    • a. Open the scanning software folder located on the desktop
    • b. Select Adobe Photoshop CS4.
  8. In Photoshop select File > Import > EPSON Expression 10000 XL scanner.
  9. Select the proper settings for your image scan and preview:
    • a. Document Type: Film
    • b. Film Type: Positive or Negative Film
    • c. Image type: 24 bit Color or 8 bit Grayscale
    • d. Resolution: 600 dpi
    • e. Press the preview button
  10. In the preview window, use the cursor to draw a box around the desired area to be scanned. A box of “marching ants” should appear. This box can be adjusted as needed. Only the image within this box will be scanned.
    • Note: The fine tune cropping of your image will take place later in post processing.
  11. Click the Scan button to scan the document.
  12. After the scan is complete, close the Epson scan window.
    • Note: It might be minimized in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen in the Epson tab. Bring it up and close out of the Epson scan software. You will not be able to manipulate the scanned document in post processing until the Epson preview window has been closed.
  13. You are now ready to save your scan and post process your scanned image in Photoshop. For further instruction, see Basic Document Manipulation in Adobe Photoshop.
