Freedman Center/Recording Voice
1. Check out a SecuriKey™ and a USB headset (with microphone).
2. Plug your SecuriKey™ into the port at top of the keyboard to unlock the computer.
3. No password is required; simply press Enter.
4. Create yourself a folder in the My Documents folder and label it with your network ID.
5. Insert the digital headset into one of the two USB ports on the left side of the computer monitor.
6. Unfold the headset and position the microphone as shown.
7. Open the Sound Forge Audio Studio, located in the Audio Editors Folder on the desktop.
8. Select the red Record button, located under File at the left. This selection opens up the Recording Window.
9. Verify that speaking into the microphone affects the levels. Ideally, your levels on the decibel meter should be around 15, and not at all in the red zone.
Note: The Reset button next to the levels resets the clip warning.
To adjust the levels:
a. Right click on the volume icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select 'Open Volume Control'.
b. Click on Options, then Properties.
c. Adjust volume for 'Recording' instead of 'Playback.' Click OK.
d. Adjust the Capture Volume according to your normal speaking voice to avoid clipping (the red zone) in Sound Forge.
10. When you are ready to record, press the red record button in the already-open recording window. The red recording button will flash while you are recording.
11. When finished, press the stop button to end the recording. Close the pop up window.
Note: Selecting the red record button again will add to the end of the current track.
12. Begin by selecting play to listen to the data you have just recorded.
Note: The leftmost play button starts playback from the beginning of the track whereas the play button on the right starts playing from wherever the cursor is clicked.
13. Next, to increase the volume of the track without clipping, normalize the audio. Drop down the Process tab and select Normalize, then click OK. (This will ensure that the final volume is neither too loud nor too soft)
14. Save the file as a .wav file in your CaseID folder, located in My Documents.
[edit] Basic Editing
If you'd like to trim the clip or separate it into tracks:
1. Zoom in on the audio file to easily see the beginning and end of each segment.
2. Click near the beginning of the clip and press ‘M’ to create a marker.Note: This marker can then be moved by dragging the playhead.
3. Make a marker at the beginning and the end of each clip.
4. Zoom back out to see all the markers/clips together.
5. Double click on a segment. (This will automatically highlight between two markers)
6. Press Ctrl + C to copy, then Ctrl + E to move the copied segment to a new file.
7. Name and save the new .wav file in your folder.
Note: We do not recommend making MP3s in this program. MP3s are best made in iTunes. Refer to the ‘.Wav to .Mp3 Conversion’ Freedman Center Wiki.
