[edit] Podcasting at Case
- This podcasting how-to is specific to podcasting on the Case blog system. It assumes that you already have a Case blog set up, so if you do not go do that first.
The first step to podcasting is recording your audio content. This can be as simple as recording your own voice to an mp3 file or involve hours of custom music, intros, interviews, and other special content. In the end though, we all end up with an .mp3 file that we want to make into a podcast (most podcasts are mono 64kbs .mp3 files). Don't forget to put an ID3 tag on your .mp3 to identify its content.
Actually putting your mp3 online for a podcast can be done in under 5 minutes, thanks to the great blog setup we have here at Case.
Publishing a Podcast:
- Log into blog.case.edu, click Create new entry, then click the Upload File button on the left. I recommend choosing "Local Site Path" and creating a folder called "podcasts" (see example image) while naming your .mp3 file according to the date. This will give your final podcast a cleaner URL, for example: http://blog.case.edu/FreedmanCenter/podcasts/10-07-05.mp3
- After clicking upload, you will be prompted to create a new entry with a link. Choose the Create new entry option and click the Link button.
- The Case blog system will automatically create a new entry for you with a link to your podcast. Give your entry a title and write a description about your podcast. The Case blog system generates a proper RSS feed for subscription with you publish your entry. You are finished!
Initial Setup (pre 2006 blogs only):
If your blog was created before Jan 6, 2006, you must complete this initial setup for proper RSS subscription support.
- Sign in to blog.case.edu
- Click on the Templates button. (you need to add a single line to your RSS template to enable podcast support)
- Click on the RSS Template to edit it.
- Add the text <$MTEntryEnclosures$> after the <item> line. It should look something like this:
- Press Save. Your blog is now ready for podcasting!
[edit] Listing your podcast in the iTunes directory
Putting your podcast into the iTunes directory makes it simple for anyone to find it. Getting into the directory is easy!
- Locate your RSS feed.
- Every Case blog has an RSS feed for subscriptions, located somewhere like this: blog.case.edu/yourblog/rss20.xml. The Freedman Center RSS feed for example is here: http://blog.case.edu/FreedmanCenter/rss20.xml
- Enter the address to your RSS feed in iTunes here.
- Enter the description details about your podcast.
- You are finished! You might have to wait for the iTunes staff to approve your podcast before being listed in the directory, but in our case this took under 12 hours.
