Freedman Center/DVD Authoring

[edit] Introduction

Copyright: When planning a digital capture project, begin by requesting permissions for materials not in the public domain. If there are digital photographs, video, or sounds for which permission to copy cannot be obtained, the Freedman Center will not support the capture of the materials.

DVD Authoring is the third step in a 3-step process.

DVD production has many intricacies and is a non-linear process. Do call upon our friendly staff for any help you may need alone the way. After the project is set up, the actual burning process takes about 15 minutes.

[edit] DVD Authoring

  1. Check out a SecuriKey™ and analog headphones from the Freedman Center desk.
  2. Plug the SecuriKey™ into the port at top of the keyboard to unlock the computer.
  3. No password is required; simply press Enter.
  4. On the desktop open the CD & DVD Burning folder. Select Ulead DVD Workshop.
  5. Start a new project. Set the name and then click the box below to set the path to your folder.
  6. Click on the folder icon to browse for the mpeg files that you previously made, and add them to the library.
  7. Drag each video file from the library area on the left onto the New Title slot to add them to the DVD. Do not drag them in the First Play.
  8. Optional: Chapter points can be set by double clicking on each video clip and using the slider under the video window and finding the desired location with the slider and clicking the Chapter Point button on the right. (Right clicking on a chapter in the chapter list on the right or on the video window itself gives the option of setting that frame of the video as the chapter thumbnail.)
  9. Once all the chapter points and thumbnails have been set, click on the Menu tab at the top of the screen. Next click on the icon next to Video–General and drop down to Image-General.
  10. This will display preset images used for backgrounds, but you may also click on the folder to browse the computer for other images. Simply dragging the image from the left onto the menu window sets the DVD’s menu background.
  11. The background image can only be set in the Menu tab. If you want to change your background in later steps, you will need to return to the Menu tab.
  12. Drag the video titles or chapters onto the menu to create buttons. The video files may be selected with the arrows in the bottom right corner.
    • Under the Button-Style menu uncheck the motion button.
  13. You can change the shape of the button a little by setting a frame for the button. Drag a frame from the left onto the button (see screenshot below).
  14. Click on the Text tab.
    • Double click on empty space in the menu window to add text.
    • Text options can be adjusted on the left of the screen
  15. Preview your project:
    • When you are satisfied with the menu, hit the Finish tab at the top of the screen. This window has a filled in play button which allows the user to preview their complete DVD to check to make sure all menus and clips are in order. To burn it to a disc, insert a blank DVD into the computer and hit the button on the upper right with the image of a flaming disc. Hit the Burn button in the popup widow to initiate the burning process, and you are finished.
