[edit] Capturing the Vinyl Record

  1. Request a record cleaning kit from the front desk.
  2. Ensure that the record to be converted is clean.
  3. Place the record onto the turntable.
    • The record will rest on top of the felt platter; 33 and 78 records will fit directly onto the turntable, but 45 records require the use of the aluminum adapter recessed into the upper left corner of the turntable.

  4. Power on the turntable.
    • Turn this knob to the right to power on the turntable.

  5. Ensure the turntable source is selected on the black selector box/Sima box.

  6. Ensure the appropriate speed is selected and start the turntable.
    • The three rotation speeds correspond to either 33 (left), 45 (right), or 78 (both) sized records; the turntable is started using the button beside the speed selector.

  7. Open the Sound Forge Audio Studio, located in the Audio Editors Folder on the desktop.
  8. Now we're ready to start the recording process:
    • a. Click the record button in Sound Forge. This will pop up another window.
    • b. Press the record button in this window to begin recording the file onto the computer.
  9. Place the stylus (needle) onto the record at the location of the song to be recorded.
    • This can be done manually,
    • Or, the needle can be cued using the release lever at the base of the arm on the record player.
  10. Once the record is finished recording, remove the needle from the record. On the computer, press the stop button and close the pop up window.
  11. Save the file in your CaseID folder in My Documents

[edit] Digital Vinyl Restoration

  1. Now, let's clean up the sound a little bit!
  2. Click Tools, then Audio Restoration
  3. This will open the Audio Restoration Window. In there:
    • a. Select "General restoration" from the drop-down menu.
    • b. Press preview to hear the restored sound (clicking "Bypass" will let you compare the unrestored sound to the restored sound)
    • c. When you're satisfied with the restoration, click OK.

[edit] Creating Audio Tracks

If you'd like to separate the audio into tracks:

  1. Zoom in on the audio file to easily see the beginning and end of each segment.
  2. Click near the beginning of the clip and press M to create a marker
    • This marker can then be dragged as close to the clip as possible.
  3. Make a marker at the beginning and the end of each clip.
  4. Zoom back out to see all the markers/clips together.
  5. Double click on a clip. (This will automatically highlight from one marker to the next)
  6. Press Ctrl + C to copy, then Ctrl + E to move a copy to a new file.
  7. In this new file, go to Process and select Normalize. (This will make sure your clip is neither too loud nor too soft.)
    • Press OK on the normalize dialog box.
  8. Save the new file in your folder.
