Freedman Center/Converting Records
[edit] Capturing the Vinyl Record
- Request a record cleaning kit from the front desk.
- Ensure that the record to be converted is clean.
- Place the record onto the turntable.
- Power on the turntable.
- Ensure the turntable source is selected on the black selector box/Sima box.
- Ensure the appropriate speed is selected and start the turntable.
- Open the Sound Forge Audio Studio, located in the Audio Editors Folder on the desktop.
- Now we're ready to start the recording process:
- a. Click the record button in Sound Forge. This will pop up another window.
- b. Press the record button in this window to begin recording the file onto the computer.
- Place the stylus (needle) onto the record at the location of the song to be recorded.
- This can be done manually,
- Or, the needle can be cued using the release lever at the base of the arm on the record player.
- Once the record is finished recording, remove the needle from the record. On the computer, press the stop button and close the pop up window.
- Save the file in your CaseID folder in My Documents
[edit] Digital Vinyl Restoration
- Now, let's clean up the sound a little bit!
- Click Tools, then Audio Restoration
- This will open the Audio Restoration Window. In there:
- a. Select "General restoration" from the drop-down menu.
- b. Press preview to hear the restored sound (clicking "Bypass" will let you compare the unrestored sound to the restored sound)
- c. When you're satisfied with the restoration, click OK.
[edit] Creating Audio Tracks
If you'd like to separate the audio into tracks:
- Zoom in on the audio file to easily see the beginning and end of each segment.
- Click near the beginning of the clip and press M to create a marker
- This marker can then be dragged as close to the clip as possible.
- Make a marker at the beginning and the end of each clip.
- Zoom back out to see all the markers/clips together.
- Double click on a clip. (This will automatically highlight from one marker to the next)
- Press Ctrl + C to copy, then Ctrl + E to move a copy to a new file.
- In this new file, go to Process and select Normalize. (This will make sure your clip is neither too loud nor too soft.)
- Press OK on the normalize dialog box.
- Save the new file in your folder.
