[edit] What is the Freedman Center?

The Freedman Center is a partnership between the Kelvin Smith Library and the College of Arts and Sciences, with support from Instructional Technology and Academic Computing (ITAC). In short, the Freedman Center is a Digital Library, Language Learning, and Multimedia Services Center, whose presence on campus was made possible by the generous donation of Samuel B. and Marian K. Freedman. The Center provides help with creating digital materials, provides instructional assistance with technologies, and provides a state-of-the-art language lab. The Freedman Center is primarily self-service. How-to guides are available and trained staff will always be present to help you get started.

[edit] Who can use the Freedman Center?

The Freedman Center is open to all faculty, students, and staff. You must have a valid Case ID, your library account must be in good standing (less than in $15 fines), and are expected to abide by the Case Copyright & KSL Acceptable Use policies.

[edit] What can one do in the Freedman Center?

Multimedia Workstations

Scan images from:

  • 35mm slides & negatives
  • Pictures, books & magazines (up to 8.5” x 14”)
  • Larger pictures, atlases, books, magazines & transparencies, x-rays and more (up to 12” x 17”)
  • Multiple Pages Documents

Edit images with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements & Fireworks. Create drawings with Illustrator & Freehand. Create websites with Dreamweaver. Layout documents with Publisher & InDesign. Author Multimedia with Flash & PowerPoint.


Audio/Video Workstations

Electronics Galore.
Electronics Galore.

Edit video with Premiere, Premiere Elements, Vegas & Movie Maker. Edit audio with Nero Wave Editor, Sound Forge & Acid Music. Author DVDs with Ulead DVD Workshop & DVD Architect Studio. Encode video with Windows Media Encoder, QuickTime, RealProducer & TMPGEnc Plus. Capture audio and video from:

  • DVD (any Region) & Laserdisc
  • DV, VHS & SVHS (NTSC, PAL or SECAM)
  • Records (33, 45, & 78) & Cassette Tapes


Language Lab Workstations

Access Language Lab Resources. Video conference with others throughout the world. View international DVDs and VHS Tapes on select workstations.


Adaptive Technology Workstation

Provides access to computing resources for those who are physically, visually, or learning impaired.

  • Wacom Drawing Tablets
  • Analog Headphones
  • Software Manuals

For use outside the center:

  • 5 Megapixel Kodak Digital Camera Kit (2 day loan)
  • Sony MiniDV Digital Video Camera Kit (2 day loan)
  • 5GB Micro USB drive for tranporting image and video files to and from the center (24 hour loan)


Collaboration

Many of the workstations in the Freedman Center are collaborative and designed for 2 or 3 people working together. Patrons are invited to bring in their own laptops. Power and network hookups are provided at all workstations.

For those who prefer Macs instead of Windows, the center also has an Apple Multimedia Workstation & an Apple Audio/Video Workstation.


Planetary Scanning Services

Planetary Scanning is a for fee service, offered as a partnership between the Freedman Center and KSL Preservation Services. The planetary scanner can be used to capture high resolution digital images of materials difficult or impossible to scan on traditional scanners, such as tightly bound or fragile books, oversized journals, large maps, posters and other materials for preservation, reproduction, archiving and electronic dissemination. Because it scans from above, minimal damage is caused to the original item.

Pimsleur Language Learning bookchips are available in the lab for the following languages:

  • English as a second language (ESL) programing is available at ELS Language Center on campus. The ELS Language Center has been teaching English as a second language to speakers of other languages since 1975. ELS offers a twelve-level program divided into four-week sessions. Classes are held daily and are taught by experienced, degreed instructors. ELS is open to all who are interested in improving their English proficiency.
