From the Film Society website: "The Film Society is a non-profit, student-run organization dedicated to the promotion of film as an art form. We make available to the University community films of artistic and cultural importance, as well as a number of the more popular films of recent years."

The Society was organized in 1970 through the motivation of Professor Louis Gianetti, then a new faculty member in the Department of English. Gianetti served as the organization's advisor until his retirement in 2000.

The Film Society shows films in Strosacker Auditorium almost every Friday and Saturday evening during the academic year (no films are shown during mid-semester breaks and Thanksgiving weekend). When Strosacker is unavailable (the Office of Alumni Relations, Programs, and Events controls scheduling for the building), films are shown in Schmitt Lecture Hall. In addition, advance screenings are scheduled when available, usually on weeknights, and are free to all attendees.

Admission currently costs $3. The schedule is available online.

For the 2005--2006 season, the Film Society also played host to the Cleveland Museum of Art's Panorama Film Series of Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening shows while their theater was closed as part of renovations.
