[edit] What is Docshare?

Docshare is a document sharing application that allows you to share documents between multiple users and multiple computers. Files can be manipulated using a simple web interface, or by mounting your docshare folders as remote folders on your computer.

Docshare is NOT intended as a bulk file storage or computer backup facility, and should not be used as such.

[edit] Who can use Docshare?

At this time docshare is in an open beta test. Anyone with a valid Case user ID and password can sign up for space on docshare.

[edit] How do I sign up?

Just go to https://docshare.case.edu and follow the signup instructions. Click the "Sign Me Up" button on the middle-left side of the docshare window. You need to have a current Case Network account to sign up for a docshare account.

[edit] How much space do I get?

You get 1GB of storage with your docshare account.

[edit] How should I use Docshare?

You can use docshare to share your personal documents between multiple computers or you can share documents with multiple people.

  • To share your personal documents between multiple computers just mount your docshare account on each computer and use it like any other drive.
  • To share documents with other people use the web pages to set access permissions on the files you want to share and then send the URL for those files to the people that you want to share them with.

[edit] How do I access Docshare as a drive?

Either by using WebDrive (available from the Software Center), or the WebDAV client appropriate for your operating system.

[edit] How should WebDrive be configured?

  • The URL for your folder is "https://docshare.case.edu/dav/<uid>/" where <uid> is your Case Network ID. For your own folder, leaving out the /dav/ will probably work, but when connecting to other users shares or a group share, you will need it.
  • To hide files beginning with “.” (period), check the “Hide filenames that being with period” checkbox (located in Site Properties, File section)
  • To work properly with Office 2007 and perhaps some other Windows application, check the “Enable NTFS File Security (for applications requiring NT Security) checkbox (located in Site Properties, File section)

[edit] How do I mount my files on Mac OS X?

  • The simplest way is from the finder type "Command-K" (or select "Connect To Server" from the "Go" menu). From there enter "https://docshare.case.edu/dav/<uid>/" (where <uid> is your Case Network ID) and then click on the "connect" button.
  • Timeouts have been reported when uploading large files (100+ MB). This appears to be a problem with the Mac OS X Finder. Using [cadaver] may be a better option for uploading large files.

[edit] How do I mount my files on Linux?

  • From the command line, you could use [cadaver],
 cadaver -e https://docshare.case.edu/dav/<uid>/

[edit] What is a shared account?

Shared accounts (aka organizational accounts) are accounts set up for a group of people. (University Department or Student Group) Shared accounts can be accessed and managed by any member of that group. Shared accounts are also larger than individual accounts (50GB) and not tied to any one person's account.

[edit] How do I get a shared account?

During the open beta it is not possible to get a shared account.

Part of our process of moving from beta to full production is to create the infrastructure necessary to allow individuals to request and configure shared accounts.

[edit] How can I give my non-Case friends/colleagues password-protected access to my Docshare storage?

For the folder you wish to grant access to, click on either the directory's current 'read access' or 'write access' listing (it's possibly 'everybody', or 'admins', or a group name or a userid), From there, select 'add new user' and follow the instructions there. All of these 'local accounts' are local to your account, have userids prepended with 'docshare.', and require a password of 8-12 characters. Note that local accounts will only be able to access files via WebDAV (read/write, if allowed) or read-only via a browser. They will not be able to log in to the web interface.

[edit] My Statistics tab doesn't work

When you first create your account, the statistics tab will generate an error until you access your storage via HTTP, and wait for the statistics update to run. The simplest way to get it to work is to visit https://docshare.case.edu/<uid>/ with a web browser, and wait about an hour.

[edit] Going to this share in a browser didn't work right!

The most likely cause of this is missing the trailing slash in the URL on a password protected share. https://docshare.case.edu/userid won't work, but https://docshare.case.edu/userid/ will. Also make sure that you've been given permissions to access the folder.

[edit] Where can I go for further help?

Problems or questions should be addressed to the Case Help Desk (368-HELP) for trouble ticket generation.

General informational questions may be addressed to the Docshare Administrators.
