[edit] Overview

The Digital Case Implementation is well underway with a Public Beta Release scheduled for End of January 2006. The public implementation for Release 1 of Digital Case is schedule for April 28th. The Final Release of this software will be available at the following location: http://library.case.edu/digitalcase

See Slide 6 of the following presentation for Media:DigitalCasePresentation.ppt for an architecture diagram outlining the components that make up Digital Case.

[edit] Project Scope

Release 1-----

The current implementation schedule calls for the following features to be included as part of the Release 1 candidate for Digital Case:

  1. Handle System Requirement – long term, persistent URLS for publishing
  2. Lucene for Search and Retrieval - XML aware and pick up element names
  3. Image Server and Client – support for jpeg2000 thumbnail, and mid-size, large-size images. This will allow for all derivative images to be created from one master preservation copy image.
  4. Support for multiple versions of a file - only query and retrieve documents that are set to active
  5. Admin Interface: Should have the following features:
    1. Contribution of all content and at least Dublin Core metadata from any authorized user with an approval mechanism by librarians. Certain categories of individuals and materials in the Case community will be authorized to contribute (e.g. faculty, research staff) for faculty post-print or pre-print papers. Other kinds of collections (for example, large image collections) will require librarian intervention for ingest and will not normally be self-deposited.
    2. A click-through licensing agreement (currently under review by University Counsel) that grants Digital Case a non-exclusive right to store and display the content in perpetuity. This license form must be scrolled through, and there will be at least one choice of the type of license that will need to be checked off. After scrolling and checking the appropriate box, the depositor must click "OK" (or similar text) which will serve as a digital signature allowing the deposit in Digital Case. This license form must be completed prior to contribution
    3. Ability for Librarians to delete content from production. Content may only be deleted by authorized library users; may not be deleted by contributors without library intervention.
    4. Ability of Librarians to modify metadata.
  6. Creation of Book Presentation Template: Linda is going to provide an XSLT document to be used to present xml files that have been marked-up in TEI for eventual representation as a book.
  7. Professional Site Design for the public interface – currently working with Marketing and Communications Office

Release 2-----

While the release 2 schedule has not been finalized, we are currently looking to implement the following features and will be deciding on an implementation schedule over the next few weeks.

  1. Audio & Video streaming support
  2. Embargo Support - support for sun rising and setting of content
  3. JOVE Release - validates documents against a standard
  4. Website Archiving – allow for presentation and searching of a websites at a point in time

[edit] Key Elements of Website

  1. The university will use Digital Case as both a repository for the scholarly output of the university as well as a mechanism to market Case to potential students and faculty. Although Digital Case will be used by Case students, faculty and staff, it is anticipated that most customers of the Digital Case web site will be external to university. The design of the web site for Digital Case must serve both functions.
  2. Authentication will not be required for searching, browsing, viewing most materials
    1. Some materials may have viewing restrictions to Case-only; for those materials, authentication by Case ID will be required.
  3. The web site will be organized around a series of templates. The templates for the specific collections will contain a textual description of the collection, details about number and type of items, information about viewing restrictions, other metadata elements appropriate for the collection, etc.
    1. Template that allows for searching and browsing of the entire "collection of collections" in Digital Case. The template will feature a graphic representation and a brief textual description of the type of material in a collection. (For example, a graphic of a book for the Digital Books collection; a picture of Prof. Krauss for the Lawrence Krauss collection; etc.) The "collection of collections" page will allow for a link between the representation of the collection on this main page to the template home page for the specific collection itself. The template must allow for easy expansion as the number of collections grows.
    2. Template for books encoded in TEI for 'book-like' display on web. Preferably, the template will display some aspects of a physical book; perhaps "page turning" based on the TEI XML mark-up.
    3. Template for image based collections incorporate with Aware image server
    4. Template for audio- or video-based collections.
    5. Template for collections that cannot be represented visually--that is, they would never be displayed on a computer monitor--for example, data sets, GIS data for maps (although it is possible that the maps could be represented on some computers with appropriate software.)
    6. A feature that allows for members of the Case community to create personalized collections consisting of items selected from within Digital Case. For the foreseeable future it is not desirable to open this selection feature to collections outside of Digital Case.
  4. There must be a linking mechanism from the collection template back to the main "collection of collections" template.
  5. There must be a clear link from Digital Case main page back to the Kelvin Smith Library main page, as well as to the case.edu main page.
