- Cedar/Fairmount
- Map
- Website
- Cedar/Fairmount is located just south of campus at the moniker-appropriate intersection of Cedar Rd. and Fairmount Blvd. This is where you will find (Little) Giant Eagle grocery store and the medical school extension library (aka Starbucks—now with wireless Internet!). Other stores include Zoss bakery, Sun Daez tanning salon, a small bookstore and wine shop as well as a few other assorted stores. In addition there is the Gelateria, a little shop where you can grab some gelato and people watch. If you are starting to feel the effects of caffeine addiction, Osiyo Tea House is a refreshing alternative.
- Restaurants: Aladdin’s (Lebanese), Bruegger’s Bagels, Mad Greek (Indian & Greek), The Fairmount (Martini bar), Jillian’s (pool and beer – note that there is free pool on Thursdays for one hour with ID!), Zoss Bakery, Gerlateria, and Nighttown (Jazz and food).
- Bars:
- Cedar/Lee
- Map
- This intersection of Cedar and Lee Roads has a number of restaurants, stores and bars. The Cedar Lee Theater is located here, a great venue for indie flicks. On Mondays tickets are $5 all day with free popcorn.
- Restaurants: Restaurants include Lopez (Mexican), Lemon Grass (Thai), Stone Oven Bakery (bakery/restaurant), and Starbucks.
- Bars: The Wine Room (Wine), The Pub
- Chinatown
- Map
- Cleveland’s “Chinatown” is loosely scattered through several blocks around E. 30th and Payne. It is small, but has quite a few fun and unique places worth checking out. At #1 Pho, you can get a large bowl of Vietnamese noodles (Pho) for $6.95. Li Wah, Bo Loong, and C&Y offer Dim Sum, a Southern Chinese dining style which allows one to try many small dishes presented on passing carts. Fresh Asian produce, seafood, bakery etc. Tink Hall and Golden Bakery can be found at the Asian groceries in this area.
- Restaurants: Siam Café (Chinese/Thai/Cambodian), Bo Loong (Chinese), Li Wah (Chinese), and Seoul Hot Pot (Korean)
- Coventry
- Map
- Website
- Coventry is a short strip just east of campus that has a sort of artsy feel with a mix of great restaurants, bars and interesting shops. Some of the more unique shops include Big Fun, a must see full of old toys and paraphernalia – you can get your own New Kids on the Block button or Garbage Pail Kids cards. Record Revolution, a locally owned store, sells a great selection of music from all genres, but definitely has an alternative vibe. There is also Passport to Peru which has hemp clothes, silver jewelry and trinkets and art from all over the world. There are also great restaurants and bars mentioned in more detail elsewhere in the guide.
- Restaurants: Pacific East (sushi), Chipotle (burritos), Que Tal (burritos), Grum’s (subs), Dave’s Cosmic Subs (duh), Mongolian BBQ, Tommy’s (various), Guy’s Pizza, Hunan’s on Coventry (Chinese), and the Inn on Coventry (various)
- Bars: Panini’s, McNulty’s and the Winking Lizard, B-Sides, Cave du Vin (Wine)
- Little Italy
- Website
- Map
- Located just up the hill from campus on Mayfield, Cleveland’s Little Italy has great art galleries, restaurants and bakeries as well as colorful shops that often blast Italian opera late into the night. You can generally wander the street and check out the menus posted at the door to figure out where you want to go. There is also a famed doughnut shop, Gilly’s, which is open into the early morning hours for those that need a quick sugar fix. Another tip, La Dolce Vita offers a ladies’ night special on Tuesdays (see Specials section). Other draws include the Feast of the Assumption, a huge festival in mid August which closes down the area for a few days, and the Murray Hill Art Walks which showcase the multiple art galleries in the area.
- Restaurants: Mama Santa’s, Baricelli Inn, Pesti's Bakery, Gilly's nd others
- Bars:
- Ohio City
- Website
- Map
- This area on the west side tends to be far enough that it is an infrequent trip. Those brave souls that do wander out are rewarded by a culture that is entirely different from the East side. Unique restaurants in Ohio City such as Johnny Mango, an eco-friendly establishment that prohibits smoking, and the Great Lakes Brewery (where all the yummy local beer comes from), replenish the hungry stomach of the pilgrim. For those who prefer to do their partying as far away from school as possible, Ohio City offers up Möda, their swanky nightclub.
- Restaurants: Johnny Mango
- Bars: Great Lakes Brewery
- Shaker Square
- Map
- Website
- Despite its name, Shaker Square is not located in Shaker Heights, but is in Cleveland. Southeast of the school, at the intersection of Moreland Blvd and Shaker Blvd., Shaker Square is a traffic circle lined with shops and restaurants, and in fact is listed as the second oldest shopping center in the country and is registered as a historical landmark. It has a quaint feel and a diverse assortment of shops. It is accessible by Rapid, but not directly from campus. However, you can get there via the Community Circulator. Parking is free in the lots behind the stores. Shaker Square Cinemas offers a mix of indie and mainstream films. They don’t offer a student discount, but on Mondays movies are $5 with small popcorn included. Nearby there is a strip of antique shops and on the weekend they have a farmers market.
- Shopping: Ann Taylor, Next, and others
- Restaurants: Luchita’s (Mexican), Sushi on the Square, and Yours Truly (American)
- The Flats
- Map
- Once the hub of nightlife in Cleveland, the Flats have suffered a fall in popularity. The Powerhouse complex on the West bank of the Flats is still a popular venue, though, and houses the Rock Bottom Brewery and Howl at the Moon Saloon (piano bar) as well as the Cleveland Improv (Comedy). Also on the West bank is Shooters, a large bar along the river, which has remained a popular happy hour spot where people sit on the unbelievably huge outdoor deck and watch the boats pass. The East bank still has multiple bars and clubs, but the Warehouse District has taken over as place to go on the weekends.
- Restaurants:
- Bars: Rock Bottom Brewery, Howl At the Moon (piano bar), Shooters
- Tremont
- Website
- Map
- Tremont is a great place to go if you want to feel a little bit older and “class it up” for an evening. This historic neighborhood is famous around Cleveland for its art galleries and nightlife. There are restaurants galore and plenty of bars available for an after-dinner beverage or just some weekend partying. There’s plenty to do in Tremont: coffee shops, clubs (Parallax), restaurants, neighborhood pubs , wine and martini bars, art galleries, an ice cream place, and pizza joints. Tremont is just a great place to spice up your nightlife a little bit.
- Restaurants: Fahrenheit, Lolita, Fat Cats, Big Guys Pizza
- Bars: Dempsey’s Oasis Tavern, Lincoln Park Pub, 806 Wine (Wine), Martini Bar (martinis)
- University Circle
- Warehouse District
- Map
- Located roughly around the intersection of West 6th and St. Clair, this former industrial warehouse district has been transformed into a diverse collection of trendy restaurants, clubs and bars. Some highlights include D’Vine, a wine bar with great atmosphere but a slightly older crowd and Blind Pig, your basic bar where multiple med school social events have been held. Spy Bar, Velvet Dog and Liquid/Fusion are also popular clubs/bars. Great restaurants, generally pretty pricy. Sushi Rock has a discount night on Wednesday (see Specials section).
- Restaurants: Mallorca (Spanish), Sushi Rock, Cleveland Chop House (steaks), Metropolitan Café (American) and Circo Zibibo (Italian)
- Bars: D'Vine (Wine Bar), Blind Pig, Spy Bar, Velvet Dog, and Liquid/Fusion
[edit] Places to Live
- The Waldorf
- Address: 2300 Overlook Road Map
- Reviews
- The Waldorf is a building about 10-15min. walk from school. About 35 first year med students live there currently, I think. The problem with the Waldorf is that it's really expensive (by Cleveland standards) for no real reason, generally anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars more to double the price of other places for the same space. I personally didn't like the interior of the building, to me it's like an old art deco hotel but not in a good way, so I didn't choose to live there but there are plenty who really like it. It's a big safe building with a bunch of other students and they always have housing available and there's free continental breakfast in the mornings.
- Overlook Road and Murray Hill
- Overlook Road Map
- Most first years live in the vicinity of Overlook Rd. (feel free to google map it, the Waldorf's on this road too) & Murray Hill (Little Italy). These places are about a 5-15 min. walk from school, with Murray Hill being the closest. There's a ton of small apartment buildings along Overlook and a lot of apartments for rent on Murray Hill. Many of the buildings on Overlook will be listed on online resources, but you can also just come to cleveland in june and walk up and down those roads and you'll see "for rent" signs everywhere. If you're willing to live a bit farther (20-25min walk or 5 min drive), South Overlook is a popular residential road filled with houses/duplexes and a bunch of people live around Cedar Ave. too. Housing in cleveland is plentiful and cheap. I've got no info. about realtors, but several first years bought houses.
[edit] Finding Housing
- Looking for a new residence?
- First check out http://studentaffairs.case.edu/living/services/aloha/
- This is a website specifically for CWRU students. Here there are postings for studios, apartments, housing and roommates. Another option is craigslist.org but it can be a little sketchy, so don't put up too much info and screen emails. You can also drive/walk around and look for the signs posted for room availability. Apartment guides will usually include the most expensive apartments, so checking the signs and asking around will yield the best results.
- Know your rights as a tenant, ask tenants and other students about the landlord, and READ THE LEASE!!! Some leases have auto-renew clauses built in so that if you don't notify the management that you're leaving 90 days in advance they have the right renew your lease for another year.
- Also check out http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/OH-Cleveland.html to see how others rate apartments and landlords.
[edit] Police Speed Traps / Cameras
- Mayfield Road and Superior (heading West, just before you get to Coventry Rd) Map
- This is a major speed trap that operates year-round, especially in the afternoon and evenings. The speed limit drops from 35mph to 25mph near the Walgreen and the police hide behind the Motorcars dealership. Slow down, they don't give you warnings.
- Coventry Road and Fairmount Road Map
- In the mornings, there are a couple of police officers who stand on the sidewalk and use the radar gun. They grab people going both ways.
- Lee Road and Brewster map
- There is a mounted camera that captures your plates and you get a ticket 3 weeks later.

[edit] Groceries
- Giant Eagle in Cedar Hill
- The “Little Eagle” on Cedar is the closest grocery store to campus and has most everything you would need. Get the membership card for the most savings. It has a great wine section and many gourmet and organic options. There’s another (24-hour) Giant Eagle down Mayfield which is much larger, and then finally there’s the mother of all Giant Eagles in (where else) Legacy Village.

- Marc’s in both Coventry and Mayfield
- This is a discount grocer located on both Coventry and Mayfield. They basically buy the excess from other supermarkets and sell things really cheap. You will need to use cash and the selection is variable, but you can usually get everything you need and save a lot of money in the process. The best deals are often on toiletries, shampoo, drugs etc. Caveat: the location of items is absolutely random.
- Tink Holl in Chinatown
- Recently moved to a much larger location, Tink Hall is a staple for Asian groceries, including fresh vegetables and seafood.

- West Side Market in Ohio City Website
- The West Side Market is hands down one of the coolest things in Cleveland. It’s a large market offering fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads, spices, international foods, pasta and a million other exotic things and is divided into indoor and outdoor sections. It is open on Monday and Wednesday from 7-4 and on Friday and Saturday from 7-6. You can save a lot of money and have a lot of fun while getting some really good food. Produce can often be bought at less than half the price of a grocery store, and later in the day they tend to cut prices significantly. You can also haggle over prices with stand owners whose families have been selling there for generations.
- The indoor market portion looks like an old train station with tile mosaics on the ceilings and you can hear most languages imaginable as Cleveland’s diversity seems to converge on this market, especially on the weekend. It seems to be dominated by meat sellers and bakers, but all sorts of foods are represented. The pasta is highly recommended—it’s $1 for a quarter pound, but the quality is outstanding.
- Address: 1979 W. 25th Street Map
- Phone: (216) 664-3386
- If you plan to make a trip on Saturday, go really early if you want parking. Otherwise, there’s Rapid access.
- Zagara’s near Cedar-Lee Website
- This is a family-owned grocery store on Lee road. They have an outstanding selection of gourmet and organic foods, a good wine selection, large beer fridge, and even a state liquor store. Their produce is often better quality than some of the other stores. This place is slightly expensive, but often has amazing specials on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

[edit] Intramural & Club Sports
- Intramurals
- CWRU IM Website
- Let’s face it, during your tenure as a professional/graduate student there are going to be times when you are going to need to blow off some steam. Fortunately for you, Case Western Reserve University offers a wide range of intramural activities to serve as a healthy alternative to heavy alcohol consumption. You can participate in a wide range of team (men’s, women’s, or co-ed) sports like flag football, basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball and inner tube water polo; or individual sports like horseshoes, golf, tennis, racquetball, badminton and weightlifting. Many of the activities are played in seasons that last several weeks, but others are special one day events. There are actually many more activities than those listed above, so check out the intramural web site for an extensive list of everything they offer.
- The schedules are posted online for each semester and they list the start date as well as the registration deadline. You will need to register yourself or your team before the start of the season and this is accomplished by downloading the appropriate form for the activity, filling it out, and dropping it off at the intramural office in the Veale Rec Center. In the case of team sports, a team manager will be responsible for doing just that, managing the team, i.e. filling out the forms, paying the deposit/fee (if required), and attending mandatory meetings-there is some effort involved. In most cases, a deposit is required from each team, which is returned after the completion of the season. In other cases, there is a fee, which is not returned, but is instead used to fund a pizza party, etc. at the end of the season. So, you want to play a team sport, but you don’t have a team? Well, you are in luck, the intramural office also maintains a “free agent” list. All you have to do is send an e-mail with your contact info and sports of interest they will place you on the list, which is available to teams looking for some more players. And now for the best part… not only will you blow off some steam with healthy athletic competition; the winners of each activity receive Case Intramural Champion t-shirts!!! Come on, nothing says “I rock!” like flaunting one of those shirts at your next journal club or seminar. Everyone in your department will know that in addition to being an incredibly intelligent scientist, you are also a champion athlete.
- Club Sports
- Case Club Sports Website
- For those looking for something longer term or just a different sort of activity, there are club sports. The current clubs are Aikido, archery, cheerleading, crew, cycling, fencing, ice hockey, Kendo, Kung Fu, squash, table tennis, Taekwondo, ultimate frisbee, and volleyball. Most or all of these clubs have a two week trial before you have to join. Each club has their own website with more information.
[edit] Comedy
- Improv in The Flats West Bank
- Cleveland’s improv theater is located in the Flats in a complex called the Powerhouse which also includes an arcade and various restaurants. This venue features both big touring comedy stars and relative unknowns. The best bet is to go to the late night shows on the weekends when there is a huge student discount! Call ahead to see what night the discount is being offered, on as it can vary depending on the caliber of the comedian in town.

- Cabaret Dada in the Warehouse District
- Think “Whose Line is it Anyway,” live. The place is small and they are big on audience participation. The tickets aren’t cheap, but the show is worth it. They also offer improvisational comedy clinics if you are looking to do something different. Cabaret Dada is located in the Warehouse district where there are a ton of bars and clubs so it makes for a nice night out. Call ahead to reserve tickets. Showtimes are Friday & Saturday evenings.

Ticket prices range from $10-20 depending on the comic and your seating. Call ahead for ticket reservations. Bargain Tip: If you go, be sure to fill out forms for free ticket drawings—if you go in a large group, one of you is bound to win since they give away tons of tickets.

[edit] Music
- The Agora Theater in between the Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland State University
- One of the best-known historical venues for Rock ‘n Roll, the first Agora was actually opened on Case’s campus in 1966. Though its heyday was in the ‘70s, the Agora still books major acts at both of its stages. Larger bands often fill the main stage, but the Ballroom is more intimate (I have been sweated on by lead singers…yuck).

[edit] Movies
Cleveland movie theaters are often not crowded even during opening day for major movies and along the same lines do not compare to most movie theaters at major cities. Still, that isn’t to say that they won’t sell out.

- Vidstar Video in Coventry
- A locally owned shop with a smaller, but less picked over selection and reasonable rates.
- Netflix Website
- Online DVD rental service
- Public Libraries all over Cleveland Website
- The public library is a little known secret in Cleveland. Here you can find almost any movie, and it is completely free! If you go to this website, you can search the databases of all libraries in Cleveland. If your library doesn't have the movie you want, somewhere else does. You can then place a hold, and have the movie delivered to the closest library to you.
- You can rent up to 10 DVDs at a time and keep them for 1 week. If you checked out the movies from the library in person (instead of receiving it through a hold), you can renew them up to two times. The other great thing is that you can return the DVDs to any public library, not just the one where you got your card, and you will not get late fees (if you do, they are only $0.10/day).
- Make sure to bring a proof of residence when you go to pick up your library card.
[edit] Museums
Case students now have free access to most Cleveland museums with a student ID For more details visit http://studentaffairs.case.edu/freeaccess/.
- University Circle Website
- Case sits within University Circle, an area where most of Cleveland’s museums are clustered. Most University Circle museums are free to students. Museums include the Cleveland Museum of Art (free special exhibits with ID), Museum of Contemporary Art(MOCA), Natural History Museum, where our esteemed anatomy professor, Dr. Latimer, is executive director, Crawford Auto and Aviation Museum, Botanical Gardens, Children’s Museum and the African American Museum. Also check out the Art Museum lagoon which is a beautiful place to take a break and relax.
- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Downtown Website
- You should be able to obtain free admission by virtue of being a Case student. However, this is only true during the period when the undergraduates are in class. If you go anytime after graduation and before school begins in the Fall, you will have to pay.
- Great Lakes Science Center near Downtown Website
- Has a wide variety of science exhibits as well as an Omnimax theater.
[edit] Fitness Centers
- 121 Fitness Center "One-two-One (On Campus) Website
- This fitness center is located on campus although it is not owned by the University. It is generally cheap for students; look for the deals that offer cheaper initiation fees. In general it’s between $30-40 a month and you are allowed a two month hiatus in the summer. Many departments also have corporate accounts where they let people join for cheaper fees—look for postings on the bulletin boards.

It has most everything you will need including two pools, a weight room, Hammer Strength equipment, a cardio room, classes, an indoor track, indoor tennis and basketball etc. There is also a field outdoors where most of the intramural soccer, softball, baseball and football is played, among other sports. Make sure you bring your ID to show to the guard. Lockers can be rented for the semester/year, but there are a few for daily use.
- Cleveland Heights Community Center in Cleveland Heights
- If you are a Cleveland Heights resident you are allowed access to the Cleveland Heights Community Center athletic facilities which include cardio and nautilus equipment, classes, as well as basketball courts. - Metroparks Website
- Cleveland is surrounded by what is often called the emerald necklace, referring to the ring of county-run parks surrounding the major Cleveland suburbs. There are biketrails, hiking paths and creeks surrounded by forest. The closest metropark to campus is Euclid Creek Park which has a great jogging/rollerblading/bike path that runs along Euclid Creek. The park is long but very narrow so it is fairly small, but the rock cliffs along the creek are often steep and very picturesque. People often walk/climb in the creek along the length of the park which is fun, but not possible after heavy rains. Other metroparks, including hiking and bike trails can be found at.

- Set in one of the wealthier parts of Cleveland, this is a small man-made nature preserve with walking and jogging paths. The Shaker Lakes Nature Center is also located there, which is a great place to visit if you are interested in nature and conservation.
- Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland Heights
- Ok, some people think it’s odd to consider a cemetery as a place for recreation, but this cemetery is an exception. Located just at the top of Mayfield hill past Little Italy, it is a large expanse of wooded and hilly paths and roads and is a popular place for joggers. At the highest point in the cemetery there are great views of Lake Erie and the skyline. President Garfield is buried here as well as Elliot Ness, various Rockefellers and a number of Cleveland’s prominent families. The cemetery is very old and the graves are often elaborate and beautiful. There are also ponds and picnic tables and modern outdoor sculptures throughout the park. Trolley tours run through the warmer months, and the park is open until 5:30 pm in the winter, dusk in the summer.
- MLK near Downtown
- Martin Luther King Blvd. from the North side of campus to Lake Erie doubles as both a major thoroughfare and a well maintained bike and jogging path. Scattered along the park are cultivated gardens and monuments that commemorate the various countries that contribute to Cleveland’s diversity. Each one is characteristic of its representative country and they are really interesting to look at. Note of caution however: this is probably only a safe place to go by day.

At the Feast you will find booths from your favorite Little Italy restaurants and more! Come for good food and desserts. Live music.

- Lucia's Salon
- This cute and funky salon is about a 12 minute drive from campus. They specialize in color - especially non-traditional varieties. They also give regular haircuts. Sammi is a particular favorite of the girls in the medical school class. However, this doesn't mean they all get the same haircut, she does a number of styles. Many prefer this location over La Barberia and the prices are better. They also carry really cute hair accessories and the Redken line of hair products.
