[edit] Usage Summary

PasswordSafe is a handy, cross-platform utility for individuals to manage multiple passwords.

In support of the current [1] ITS Password Change Policy, users can keep their passwords within the 180 day lifetime (and 360 day lifetime for admin/root passwords), and have the ability to manage higher change frequency of passwords. They can also use longer, more complex passwords to reduce the likelihood that the password can be guessed using commonly available passwork cracking tools.

[edit] Download and Installation

Download the appropriate version from [2] http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net

The Java version, PasswordSafe SWT v.0.6 is here [3] which works nicely for Mac users. Note some of the features (tree listing) are not perfect for this Beta release, but it interoperates nicely with the Fat versions for Linux and Windows.

[edit] Configuration

Case Network ID password guidelines are listed at http://www.case.edu/its/password/

Using password safe permits a low-impact enhancement of these basic complexity and length requirements to reduce the probability of successful password guessing. Under Options > Password Policy, choose these settings:

  • Default password length: 12-19
  • Use lowercase letters
  • Use UPPERCASE letters
  • Use digits
  • Use symbols
