[edit] Former Case Logos
[edit] ????-2007
This logo met with a bit of resistance when first introduced. Designed to improve the image of the school, the logo was looked upon by many as both apparently meaningless and not particularly attractive.According to the Site-Licensed Software section of the Software Center, the font for the "Case" part was Adobe Garamond Pro in all capitals with the first letter made larger. The text below was ITC Stone Sans Std in all capital letters. Both were commercial fonts, and required payment for their use. Some suggested that they could be converted to freely available fonts and result in virtually no visible difference such as a horizontally resized Arial substituted for the Stone Sans.
The original explanation of this logo courtesy of archive.org:
The intersection represents the two institutions that originally came together to form Case Western Reserve University, reflecting the ideal of the arts and humanities intersecting science and technology. The half spheres evoke the lines of the global hemisphere, combined to represent worldwide impact and dedication to global learning. Engaging line work represents the relationships between the university and community partners, Fortune 500 companies, and other partners who help create experiential learning, and can also be seen as a depiction of University Circle. There are gaps yet to be filled—communicating the idea that there is progress and learning yet to be achieved.
[edit] Parodies
Richard Drushel created a real-life replica of this logo using common household items, as well as a description explaining the meaning behind the logo, pictured above.
Some have also noticed that the logo looks like a "fat man carrying a surfboard." Warning: please note that once you have seen the "fat surfer" interpretation, it is very hard to see anything else when you look at the logo.
