[edit] Choosing a Title
Selecting an appropriate article title is important because well-titled articles will enhance the ability of people to find information.
The scope of the Case Wiki is centered on Case Western Reserve University. So, when chosing an article title, the article title should be somehow related to the university as a whole. Imagine this wiki as an encyclopedia of the university. The name of the article should be the topic under which you would look in the encyclopedia to find relevant information. The title should make sense to the average reader. Somebody should know what the article is about by simply seeing the title.
The following guidelines should be followed
- Acronyms should be expanded to their full title. It is encouraged to create a redirect article from the acronym to the full title.
- Avoid ambiguity. There should be no doubt what an article is about after seeing the title
If there will be a series of related articles, it is encouraged to use subpages. Subpages can be created by using a / to denote levels of hierarchy. It is preferred to keep all content on one page and use sections rather than subpages, however.
Articles related to specific courses belong in the Course namespace. The main namespace article has details for naming articles in this namespace.
[edit] Special Note for Med School "IQ Blocks"
- Good URL: http://wiki.case.edu/Course:SOM/Block2/Fall 2006/IQ6/Case1
- Bad URL:http://wiki.case.edu/B2IQ12W1

[edit] Regarding Colons
Many wikis use colons to organize page titles into pseudo namespaces. For example, Freedman Center:Transcoding Audio or CaseBlog:Howto. At page display time, the wiki realizes the page is part of a collection of related pages and provides a link to the master page and all related pages in this pseudo namespace. Unfortunately, MediaWiki, the software that powers this wiki, does not. Instead, articles are organized primarily via category association. In addition, one may create subpages of articles. Therefore, it is suggested that all related pages to a subject be categorized in the following manner:
- As subpages of an article
- Are categorized under a category with the name of the master page
For example, Freedman Center/Converting Records is preferred over Freedman Center:Converting Records. An added bonus of subpages is that MediaWiki will automatically generate a link to the master page for all sub-pages. For extra organization, associate each related page with a uniform category. Advanced users could create a template and include it in every related page.
