Suggestions for enhancements, improvements, and bug fixes for the Blog@Case system.

--Kevin.Kubasik 23:58, June 2, 2006 (EDT) I've noticed the following errors popping up at the bottom of some of the admin pages
Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/local/apache/htdocs/mt/lib/MT/App/CMS.pm line 953, line 424. Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/local/apache/htdocs/mt/lib/MT/App/CMS.pm line 954, line 424.
just a heads-up. Couldn't find a bugzilla or anything ;).
Submitted by Chad Kaschube to the blog-admin mailing list (from the text):
Could you possibly add blog rolls so we can easily link to other blogs. This would help for link exchange so our blogs can get more publicity.

Items such as maintaining blogrolls, amazon wishlists, del.icio.us bookmarks, etc. are on the todo list to make easier to manage.

As the system grows in usuage, planet.case.edu content feels cluttered to me. Perhaps we could add something like studentplanet.case.edu, orgplanet.case.edu, schoolplanet.case.edu, etc to categorize the content of the feeds to make them more useful (but still keep planet.case.edu)
--Aaron.Shaffer 20:29, October 10, 2005 (EDT)
I believe this may be achieved via enhancements to the blog topics system (or a system like it). blog.case.edu/persons/students or blog.case.edu/persons/employees or blog.case.edu/groups/cheese_club. It's an interesting problem...
--Jeremy.Smith 01:07, October 11, 2005 (EDT)
What would be nice is something like blog.case.edu/topics except it grabs from some master categories. Would it be possible to add another category field in MT that is set by the admins?. Set the choices as {school, organizations, technology, etc}. Then we can set up planet.case.edu/school planet.case.edu/technology, etc. --Gregory.Szorc 20:46, October 10, 2005 (EDT)
Again, yes, interesting problem. Take "topics" A, B, and C and somehow correlate them to a meta-topic all belonging to Topic Z. There are probably interesting data mining techniques that can do that for us (without burdening users to do it themselves).

We definitely need departmental statistics (e.g. /orgs/ksl/services/, /orgs/ksl/reference/, etc.). Perhaps they already exist, and I simply cannot figure our the correct URL to generate them.

Okay. Check them out here and here.

Submitted by Brian C. Gray 17:48, December 3, 2005 (EDT): Can additional Planet Case RSS feed be designed that includes comments? Or will this not work unless individuals incorporate something in their individual blogs or RSS feeds? Not everyone has incorporated a "subscribe to this entry" ability, so it is hard to continue on going discussions?

Is there an RSS feed for this page? --Brian.C.Gray 17:59, December 3, 2005 (EST)
The page is actually an ATOM 1.0 feed with a XSLT applied. --Gregory.Szorc 18:07, December 3, 2005 (EST)
Can it be viewed in a RSS reader? I use pluck and it recognized a feed, but the feed contained nothing not even a title. --Brian.C.Gray 08:34, December 5, 2005 (EST)
The ATOM 1.0 format is relatively new and many feed readers do not yet support it. However, the format is much more defined than RSS and it would be beneficial if it were eventually adopted as the standard for syndicated feeds. I know that Safari's built-in syndicated feed reader supports ATOM 1.0 as of the latest OS release (10.4.3 I believe). --Gregory.Szorc 08:58, December 5, 2005 (EST)
The Pluck web sites says they support ATOM. Is their more than one version of ATOM. Could any of these errors be causing my problems (http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.case.edu%2Fcomments)?
I also checked the feed in Bloglines. It recognizing the feed, but does not allow you to click through to any of the entries for some reason. --Brian.C.Gray
There are two versions of ATOM in the wild, 0.3 and 1.0. 0.3 has been around for a while now, 1.0 is new as of this summer. I've e-mailed Jeremy Smith about the comments feed not validating. He might check-in on this threat later. --Gregory.Szorc 09:44, December 5, 2005 (EST)
I fixed the atom feed. It's valid -- http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.case.edu%2Fcomments --Jeremy.Smith 16:45, December 5, 2005 (EST)
Can you set up an alternative feed (RSS) to the ATOM 1 comments feed? I tried but Pluck still is not reading the feed correctly. I think using the comments feed is an important way to continue discussions. --Brian.C.Gray 09:44, December 9, 2005 (EST)
No. Atom is now RFC4287. That's good enough for me to say "if your service doesn't follow standards, something is wrong with your service." However, I did go ahead and setup a FeedBurner feed for the comments (anyone can do it). It is located at http://feeds.feedburner.com/CaseBlogComments. Try subscribing to that. --Jeremy.Smith 13:17, December 9, 2005 (EST)
Thank you. I forgot about FeedBurner. I contacted Pluck to ask them about their ability to read ATOM 1.0 feeds, and the person that replied did not know anything about ATOM 1.0. He just repeated word for word what their web site says that "Atom does work". Obviously, they have not stayed current on the format requirements. Thanks again. --Brian.C.Gray 13:28, December 9, 2005 (EST)
Is there a way to escape the wikitext parsing extension? I tried including some wikitext between <pre> tags, but it didn't work. --Gregory.Szorc 14:01, December 7, 2005 (EST)
Break up the wikitext using a harmless injection of some HTML. For example, just shove in a <span /> tag between the double square brackets or something. --Jeremy.Smith 13:19, December 9, 2005 (EST)
