Approval of Minutes from the Last Meeting
The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
Committee Charge
Deb has posted the committee charge to the committee web page.
RDA (Deb)
Deb posted her RDA notes from the RDA workshop to the bib committee website. She said that RDA will make more sense when one is using it, and based on the information presented at the workshop, she anticipates RDA may go into effect as early as January 2010.
The committee had a brief discussion speculating about whether MARC fields 006, 007, and 008 would be retained.
Terry explained to the group that uniform titles’ purposes vary by format. They are used to distinguish between different serial titles, but to bring together different forms of a single monograph title.
Rich saw “RDA Toolkit,” a resource that can be purchased. Based on the demo, he said this would make the transition easier. He will post screen shots to wiki.
Deb told the group about an article, What is FRBR?
Deb will post document we should print out and add to AACR2 binder.
Authority Records Loader (Mike)
Pat was de-duping records and requested it load on a match point. The match point is the 001 field, but we prefer the 010 field. Rich will be checking for duplicates more frequently.
Terry wanted to know if it can be used with loader we use for exporting authority records from OCLC.
Mike suggested running one or two records thorough it so we can tell Innovative what needs to be changed. Some loaders have logic (if this, then that). What happens if we run an OCLC record through the one we want tweaked. Terry says we’ll get a duplicate. Mike will ask them to tweak it.
However, Mike will only be making the request for the 010 in his next call because it is a higher priority and he will not ask them to make multiple changes in one call.
OhioLINK Errors list (Terry)
Terry explained to the process to the group. Most people report errors on the “errors” listserv, and a designated person at each institution corrects records that its institution owns. Deb asked if we should fix OCLC, too.
856/956
Richard reported that 956 is now live, but it’s not displaying in OhioLink. He spoke with Meg Spegnoga. Terry asked why that wouldn’t be OK. Richard said it was a glitch that needed to be taken care of.
Mike reported that this implementation was more involved than just clicking a check box. After several calls, someone at Innovative fixed the problem.
Terry asked how to identify non-Ohiolink journals. Chris said that our list-making skills will be pushed to the limits. Perhaps look for something in the URL (Does not contain “Rave”). Chris asked if on the non-ohiolink there were modifications. Holding code 049. Mike suggested looking for common denominator.
Richard said they did it with the e-books.
Mike requested asking keeping the number of changes per day down. Someone made 100,000 record changes and filled our bib-temp file. Limit changes to 50,000. (Chris says big sets of ebooks produce lists this large.)
New server
Mike reported we have new server in place. Current server is 5 years old, due for replacement. We’ll be down for a day when they install it. We’ll get as much lead time as Mike gets.
Next Meeting
The next meeting will be in late September.
