Binary Walkway
The Binary Walkway is a pathway built in the fall of 2005 in the former location of the Baker Building (41.505681° N, 81.6090149° W). It was opened for public use on November 8, 2005.
The walkway is constructed of light and dark concrete blocks. There was a contest to create an appropriate block pattern for the walkway, which was won by accounting professor Thomas Schultz. In Shultz's design, the blocks are arranged to resemble a sequence of binary digits. According to Shultz, “Just as binary digits can be reorganized and configured to represent discoveries yet to be made, so can the people and resources of the Case community be combined to create and sustain the most powerful learning environment in the world. A walkway inspired by binary code offers a graphic reminder of these possibilities.” [1]
Because of the walkway's smooth surface, it can become very slippery during rainy or icy weather. Caution is advised when using the walkway during such conditions.
Due to the randomness of the binary pattern, the tendency to become slippery, and a perception that the finished walkway does not live up to the grand pronouncements that were made about it prior to its construction, the binary walkway is a common subject of ridicule among students and others.
On April 15 or 16, 2006, the following poem was chalked on the binary walkway. Unfortunately, its author was not identified.
You were already built and could not be erased You were already perfect, and could not be changed You were hard to understand Your geometry Your sensitivity ♥ Binary Walkway 4eva
